The Cooper's must have taken the pileated by surprise, as the woodpecker is large enough to put up a good fight against the hawk.   Bill Anderson; Edmonds, WA. USA

As I approached the site, the dark lump of prey turned out to be Pileated woodpecker. I walked on and on my return I spooked the hawk off its breakfast a second time.Late in the afternoon I decided to walk back and pick up some feathers only to find the carcass gone and only a few feathers scattered here and there.  Rob SandelinNaturalist, Writer, retired teacherSnohomish County
