A brief respite from several days of rain and just ahead of another storm about to arrive gave an opportunity for the birds and birders to recover. Fairly mild temps and heavy overcast early, not much wind, but there is certainly a lot of water now. All the marsh ponds are quite full and the log weirs put in to regulate flow among the ponds are actually functioning for the first time this year. Yet, the Entrance Pond had but a single bird (a Coot) and the numbers of dabblers was not that high. The downside of the nice weather was the proliferation of off-leash owners and their dogs.

Noteworthy birds:
Cackling Goose - flock of well over a hundred flying S in a perfect V
Scaup - a handful of both Greater and Lesser
Hooded Merganser - only the second sighting this year
Red-breasted Merganser - female, off NOAA shore
Western Grebe - my count was 223 birds! With the good visibility, could do a rough count of the flock that hangs out closer to the Kirkland shore (~150) but there were dozens scattered north and south
Cooper’s Hawk - 1 juvenile female in the central meadows
Wilson’s Snipe - several calling from the west meadow, early
Herring (2) and Thayer’s (1) Gull - with the typical large flock on the swim platform which included several Ring-billed as well - they are usually on the lawns
Mourning Dove - one flew in to the large cottonwoods along the shore; this is the latest sighting in the park, by several weeks
Barn Owl - 1 hunting the west meadow, early; one in day roost
Anna’s Hummingbird - even with the heavy overcast, one male was absolutely brilliant in its iridescence

For the day, 56 species.
