Here in Port Townsend this past week, I just can't help but notice that the place is crawling with Little Green Birds.

That's because , or so it seems these days, that most of the time I look out a window here at my parents house, or while driving or walking around town, I spot a Little Green Bird flying from bush to bush. "There's one!" I'll say to myself as I spot yet another one flying across the yard, or across the road. It's kind of fun and exciting.
Well, there are a number of little green(ish) birds around these parts, but these happen to be Orange- crowned Warblers. It's migration time and, same as this time in April last year - lots of Orange-crowns moving through town. Not flocks or anything - just a constant steady movement. Haven't heard one yet this year so far.
I've always enjoyed Orange-crowned warblers. While exhibiting a bit of yellow on the breast, it is a greenish yellow - not the clear yellow of a Common Yellowthroat, or the "butter" on a Butterbutt's butt (AKA Yellow-rumped Warbler). The 'orange' of the orange crown ain't exactly of oriole quality either. The whole bird seems to be dipped in green. Sort of a uniquely colored bird. A bit obscure and subdued - qualities I appreciate. Not exactly flamboyant in the song department either.
Well, whatever - there are lots about here these days. In fact I just spotted one a few minutes ago as went out to check the big Fuchsia magellanica bush which looked like it had flower buds on it - it did! Way early even for here in the banana belt. The hummers will be happy about that.
