Hello Tweets,
We're just entering my favorite time of year, when you can go out nearly
daily and find a new year bird or two. I pay close attention to my FOY
dates and am always hoping to beat them when possible. This year it seems
like everything's a bit early and the weather is ideal for migration so I
headed down to Yost Park. I soon heard a Black-Throated Gray Warbler
calling and later singing from the canopy. With some coaxing from my phone
I was able to get the bird to drop down to where I could see it to confirm
the ID (Townsend's song sounds similar). As I explored a little more I
heard a familiar whistle from the east (sunny) end of the park. After a bit
of bushwacking I was eventually able to get diagnostic views of a
Pacific-Slope Flycatcher moving around at middle heights.

The Black-Throated Gray beat my earliest county date by 5 days. The PSFL
beat my previous early date by a whopping eight days. Both those prior
records were also the earliest records accepted in eBird for the county.

Other good birds included several Hutton's Vireo's sharing trees with
Ruby-Crowned Kinglets. Always nice to see those two side by side for
comparison.
