Tom Aversa, Dick Cannings, and I have nearly completed the manuscript of a handbook and field guide to the birds of the Pacific Northwest, which will be co-published by Seattle Audubon and Heritage House in Victoria. Touching on field identification, status, distribution, and natural history, the book devotes individual accounts and range maps to over 400 regularly occurring species of the region, generously illustrated with high-quality photographs. Geographic coverage spans the area from the Continental Divide to 200 miles off the coast, encompassing the southern half of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, northwestern Montana, and part of western Wyoming.

We have secured about half of the images to be included, and are now broadening our search for the remaining several hundred by inviting all regional photographers to submit their work for consideration. A list of the birds and plumages we are presently looking for, together with a summary of technical and licensing details, can be downloaded at:

All else being equal, we will give precedence to photographs taken within the Pacific Northwest region as described above.

If you want to explore the opportunity to contribute to the success of this new book, and to see some of your best images in print, please e-mail me directly at hal at catharus.net.

We hope this announcement sparks your interest, and look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your consideration.
