On Friday, September 5, Dave Swayne and I visited the Angel Lake burn (Rattlesnake Creek area) and found very active woodpecker activity as has been reported previously. We saw at least 6 Black-backed, 9 Hairy and 1 Downy Woodpecker in less than 25 minutes.

For those who wish to visit this area, it helps to have directions. We foolishly went out with inadequate information and floundered a bit before finding the place. Quick instructions:

Traveling west from Niles (Hwy 410) on NF 1500, take the NF 1503 turnoff (at 10 miles) to the south. In about 1.7 miles, a small dirt road (NF 665) heads left (east). Drive 0.3 miles to the end of this road (actually before the end if you don’t have high clearance). Across the road from Angel Lake (barely a pond), climb the hillside with burnt trees and you will be rewarded.
