Inspired by Matt Bartels great field trip report from yesterday, I decided
to make another attempt to find Mountain Quail in Mason County this
morning.

Following Matt's description of the area the field trip searched, (about a
half mile north of Belfair-Tahuya Rd., on Elfendahl Pass Rd), I parked and
walked the roads and trails beyond the blue gate marked 115. No Quail were
seen up that way so I walked back to the car, and saw a yellow gate marked
114, about 75 yards up on the opposite side of the road. There were 2
mountain Quail calling to each other a ways up this road. There is a marsh
area about 1/2 mile up the road on the right you can see through the
trees, the birds were calling on the down slope towards the marsh. I did
not see them. Maybe next time they will come out and pose for a photo.

The reported Say's Phoebe was also present at Theler Wetlands. It was on
the fence surrounding an alpaca enclosure near the trail. A group of
joggers ran past and the bird flew across the road into an alder stand and
did not come back to the fence while I was there.

Have a great day,
