Today at about 7 PM I was watching Black Headed Grosbeaks, House Finches, American Goldfinches and Chickadees at the big (3' long, 4" diameter) sunflower feeder when they all scattered in a bird bomb - a Cooper's Hawk was in hot pursuit of a House Finch but ended up empty taloned sitting in a snag about 50 feet off of the deck. I expect now that he has found the supermarket he'll be back for another try at shopping or shop lifting as it may be.

Also today at the Little League Fields at the West end of Camas on SE 6th (Business 14) I observed a pure black dove of some species hanging out with 4 Mourning Doves feeding around the concession stand. I couldn't tell if this was the bird's actual color or if it had been somehow stained black by paint, soot, or dirt when it entered a confined space (I've seen this in Saw Whet Owls before). In any case a cool looking bird.
