[Tweeters] Aug.3-5 shorebirding Nisqually NWR, ocean shores , Westport , Tokeland areas.

Hello tweeters
An out of state birder friend asked us to show her shorebirds while at a family event in Westport.
Knowing its early for migration ,we went hoping to find as many as possible.
I list below the highlites:

NISQUALLY NWR:
3aug.
6-8 greater yellowlegs
1 lesser yellowlegs
1 pectoral sand
Sev.longbilled dowitchers
1 Wilson's snipe.

Also saw 3 juvenile Virginia rails,two still black and downy.
Most seen in the ponds south of the walkway to the boardwalk.
HOQUIAM STP:
4 long billed dowitchers.
1 spotted sand.
Many caspian terns

OCEAN SHORES:
3aug.
Very foggy at point brown,no rock pipers sighted.
Tonquin Av.
5 gr.yellowlegs
3 distant DOWITCHERS
12 least sands

Many heermanns gulls in the stp with western gulls

BOTTLE BEACH:
3aug.high tide-

Numerous black bellied plovers
Numerous short billed DOWITCHERS.
Several dunlins.3
1 ruddy turnstone.
Dozens of western and least sandpipers
Dozens of semipalmated plovers

BOTTLE BEACH:
4 aug.high tide-

All above birds in similar numbers.
3 marbled godwits.
1 semipalmated sand.
As well 2 red crossbills ,a surprise and several cedar waxwings.

NORTH COVE:
Many heermanns ,western and RINGBILLED gulls.

TOKELAND:
4aug.
Small numbers of-
Long billed curlews
Whimbrels
Willets
Marbled godwits.

MANY herrmanns gulls lining the usual GODWIT jetty and the old docks south of the marina .
also saw a red throated loon swim up to the same area onto the gravel.

MIDWAY BEACH:
Choked with grasses- cliff and barn swallows.

GRAYLAND BEACH:
4 snowy plovers near the poles that cordon off their nesting ground about a quarter mile south of the start.of the barrier,.best to walk south from grayland state park trail # 5.
A flock of turkey vultures there with an old whale carcass.

WESTPORT :
4 aug.
No shorebirds on the jetty sighted.
Many heermanns gulls everywhere!
Also pelagic cormorants,brown pelicans ,western gulls,
A bait ball with hundreds of rhinoceros auklets.and gulls,pelicans.
An injured common murre on the shore.
Pair of black scoters,1,breeding plumage horned grebe.
The boat harbor and rock breakwaters housed thousands of birds mostly heermanns
Gulls,brown pelicans and western gulls.
Noted a few pigeon guillemots in the harbor.

NISQUALLY NWR-
5aug.
Numerous greater yellowlegs in the ponds and flying around.
2 Wilson's snipes
2'longbilled dowitchers.
2virginia rails in the same places as 3 aug./immatures.
1 adult sora.
1 American bittern flyover chased by a crow.

Total shorebirds species sighted- 20
Total heermanns gulls ? Thousands!
It was a fun & productive trip even tho early for many shorebirds,.
Our friend got 3'lifers'.
