I took time from some personal matters in the area
for a quick look for shorebirds in Birch
Bay/Semiahmoo this afternoon. Tide was fairly
high but there was good mud/shoreline and some
nice birds were present with a few close enough
for photos. Shorebirds included 100+ breeding
plumage Dunlin, 30+ breeding plumage Western
Sandpipers, 40+ Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Lesser
Yellowlegs, some Least Sandpipers, 4 Killdeer, 1
Short Billed Dowitcher and two groups of Whimbrel
(6 close in and 8 or 9 very distant). Also lots
of Caspian Terns and Bonaparte's Gulls in full
breeding splendor. I did not go to Blaine to look
for the Marbled Godwit that has been present.
Weather was shockingly nice with good sun and warm
despite the wind.
