Yesterday morning after watching the dismal weather forecast, my wife and I decided to go birding any way. As soon as I got to the front of the Edmond's ferry, I saw a Parasitic Jaeger chasing a couple of gulls. I watched them as they headed out of sight to the north. There were several large groups of Surf Scoters to the north of the ferry landing. Couple of Common Loons, Pigeon Guillemots and a Red-necked Grebe were also hanging around.
We headed over to Point No Point where the weather was giving us a little break. There were 100-150 Bonaparte's Gulls flying around and sitting in the water. I always enjoy their fast style of flying, they are so tern-like, even the way they sound. There were some Common Loons and a couple of Rhinos on the water. No jaegers seen here. We ran into another birder that gave us the tip to go over to Norwegian Point behind the store at Hansville. Looking to the north, we found 15-20 Pacific Loons still sporting their breeding plumage. While watching them, there were several hundred Bonaparte's Gull being harassed by at least four or more Parasitic Jaegers. The rain started to dump and chased us into the car.
We were hopeful as we headed over to Port Townsend. Unfortunately, the wind and rain really started to pick up. We decided to be light weight birders and go for lunch at the Farmer's Market and have a beer at the Port Townsend Brewery. It was a good day but it has been a long time since I have seen it rain as hard as yesterday.
