[Tweeters] Car break-in at Discovery Park, Seattle this morning

During Summer of 2011, I was spending some "wow!" time at Sunrise.

I noticed a few people, standing among the many cars, that were unusually inactive and observant. They seemed interested in people leaving their cars and beginning their hikes. Although my intuition indicated otherwise, I thought it much more likely that they were individuals waiting for their friends to return.
I was concerned, made the hikes and was fortunate. Later, in September, I mentioned my concern to a park ranger and he told me that there had been many car break-ins at both Sunrise and Paradise that Summer. They set up a target car and caught people in the act. He told me that the police searched the home of the accused and found many missing items from the break-ins and crack.

Great detective work by the rangers and police.

I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to plant a GPS tracking device in a camera/scope bag at one of the places where birders' cars get broken into the most and find out where it goes.... perhaps working with the sheriff/police to do so. There was an NPR story several months ago where they used this technique to catch a thief stealing hay bales. Worked like a charm. Could also be submitted as a press release to all media outlets.

Hi Doug & Tweeters,

Sorry to hear about this. I too have had vehicles broken into while birding. They didn't break the window but somehow jimmied the lock. This happened at Golden Gardens. They took a camera bag with one small lens and a pair of bins. Now I don't leave anything in my car while out and about.

Just a note there have been break-ins at Magnuson Park also. They now have a private firm watching the park and ride area. You can't be too careful.

This morning I was parked at the Discovery South Parking lot and my window and another car’s window got broken out. Must have occurred about 8am. Someone saw a late 90’s Suburban leaving the parking lot quickly. It was either white or silver colored.

They took a backpack from my car and 2 bags from another car. Nothing valuable from mine was taken. Just quite a hassle to deal with.
