I went out to Juanita Bay Park this morning to look for the Black Tern. I arrived just before 7 AM and scanned the bay with no tern in sight. I kept looking until about 7:15 when I decided I had to leave. I had just zipped the cover on the scope when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. It was larger than a swallow (they were really active this morning). It was the Black Tern - it had come in from around the corner. Over the next 15 minutes it worked the bay back and forth, spending more time over on the Juanita Beach side. At one point it flew over Juanita Beach Park before cruising back over the bay.
Very nice looks of a bird in really fine plumage - far more satisfying than my "identifiable" views several years ago on Lake Sammamish.
Other birds included Violet-green, Barn and Tree Swallows, Bald Eagle, Wood Duck with 11 younglings, Hooded Merganser, Mallard, Marsh Wren, Wilson's Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Glaucous-winged Gull and Pied-billed Grebe on the nest.
