Here is a follow-up to SteveGile's report of the Blue Jay at Point no
Point this morning. Vic Nelson, who is without internet at this time,
has noted a Blue Jay on two other occasions starting about 3 weeks ago.
On May 11th there was actually two Blue Jays joining the roving flock of
Steller's Jays. The Jay flock visit to Point no Point has been
infrequent and quite unpredictable as to timing, but most visits have
been in early morning. As forme, Blue Jay remains a Kitsap nemesis.
Translation - just go to Point no Point to go birding and hope that your
timing happens to be when this flock makes an appearance. There is at
least one Western Scrub-Jay in the area. There is a resident one that
shows frequently without the flock. It is difficult to determine if it
is this one that joins with the flock when they come around.
Migration in general has been somwhat on the slow side this spring
season for us Point no Point fanatics. Perhaps that lovely stretch of
May weather has been good for the migrants (flew high and right on past
to breeding grounds), and not as good for the migrant-watchers. We still
are optimistic for a few late season goodies to spice things up a bit
Cheers and good birding,
Bainbridge Island, Washington
