[Tweeters] Chickadees versus House Sparrow

Been doing nest boxes here in Oly for close to 20 years.  In that time we have had something like five House Sparrow nests, with three in one box in one year.  Despite the reputation of the sparrows for  driving out natives, the chickadees (both Black-capped and now Chestnut-backed) seem to get first choice.

Subject: [Tweeters] Chickadees versus House Sparrow

Dear Tweeters,

Yesterday at my place (near Lyman, Skagit County) I walked by a birdhouse that I thought was unoccupied. To my surprise, I heard Black-capped Chickadee voices coming from within it.

On March 31, I had seen a pair of Black-capped Chickadees doing battle with a male House Sparrow over this birdhouse. Every time the sparrow landed on the box, the two chickadees would fly at him, pecking furiously. Then all three birds flew off. I had figured the box had been deemed unsatisfactory by all concerned, but now it seems that, after all, the chickadees have won the day.

Yours truly,
