Dear Carolyn,

I will forward this sighting to Tweeters, the Washington birder chat line.
If it would not be inconvenient you might consider sharing the location. It
could, of course, generate a small crowd with binoculars in the
neighborhood.

About three years ago one showed up at Magnuson Park and was enjoyed by many
of us. They don't normally stray this far north but as birds have wings they
can fly.

Thanks for the report.

Gene Hunn (now living in Petaluma, California)

Subject: Acorn Woodpecker

Dear Mr. Hunn:

I live in West Seattle. Today, I saw a bird at our suet feeder which, per
Sibley's, is an Acorn Woodpecker. I have never seen a bird like this
before. A friend who is an experienced "birder" said I should report the
sighting to Audubon Rare Birds. She further advised me to try to get a
picture of the bird if I see him again, which I will do.
