Greetings all,
Yesterday's Westport Seabirds Pelagic turned out fantastic with some decent weather, moderate seas and great birds.
The definite highlight of the trip was a Westport Seabirds record of 8 Scripps's Murrelets observed - which included 2 pairs loosely associating with each other. We also had a very cooperative South Polar Skua. It flew around the boat numerous times, landed fairly close to the boat hiding out in a group of Black-footed Albatross; which were eagerly coming up to the back of the boat for some scraps of chum - literally albatross at arm's length!
Other highlights included a great mammal show - 1 Elephant Seal was seen by a few, 5 Risso's Dolphins, a small pod of Pacific White-sided Dolphins, and 3 Orca - likely a transient pod.
Here are the numbers - offshore species only:
Black-footed Albatross - 116
Northern Fulmar - 6
Pink-footed Shearwater - 339
Sooty Shearwater - 4946
Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel - 254
Leach's Storm-Petrel - 112
Arctic Tern - 2
South Polar Skua - 4
Parasitic Jaeger - 1
Common Murre - 54
Scripps's Murrelet - 8
Cassin's Auklet - 58
Rhinoceros Auklet - 70
