A quick note in response to multiple posts comparing the current eastern irruption with numbers in the west. It is generally believed among snowy owl researchers that birds in the east come from different population sources (eastern Arctic, Hudson Bay) than birds in the west. Even among western snowy owls, birds in the interior (Columbia Basin/Great Basin) may come from a slightly different source than coastal birds. So, it should not be assumed that numbers in the east is any prediction to what numbers western Washington might see.
