I went out to Trail's End Ranch south of Moses Lake this morning in search of the Eastern Wood-Pewee. According to the owner, a group at 6:30 saw the bird but it wasn't singing or vocalizing.
I arrived about 8:15 and walked along the orchard, and as I approached the house I thought I heard the Eastern Wood-Pewee call, but could not locate it. After asking permission to bird the property I walked around for quite some time with lots of other birds - American Goldfinch, House Finch, European Starlings, Eurasian Collared Dove, Yellow Warbler, Warbling Vireo.
Finally, about 9:15 I got a brief, but identifiable look at the Pewee. A few minutes later I got a second brief look at the bird. It was silent the whole time I was searching for it. As I was walking out, an American Kestrel was perched in the top of the dead branches where the Pewee had shown up. I suspect that likely kept the bird under cover.
Friendly folks who seem to be pleased to have the bird present for people.
