notes from the field:

22Apr – Mid-late morning walk after dense lowland fog which once it
started lifting burned out very quickly. No Townsend’s Solitaire but the short
grass wet spot, east of the Larsen Lake restrooms, aka “the pipit patch”
had 13 American Pipits plus two more were in the NE field at SE 16th, total
15 for the day! Amazingly, especially after yesterday, no Savannah
Sparrows anywhere, and the #1 Killdeer and family east of the LL restrooms were no
where to be seen or heard either, but the #2 Killdeer continues on her
nest in the restoration area north of “The Club”. Duck numbers, all the
diving ducks on Phantom Lake were way down to just a scattering of all the
usual 4 species, all total combined, ~20-25, but more surprising was the
virtual absence of swallows with but 1 Tree and a couple Violet-greens. An
Empidonax flycatcher (Hammond’s maybe?) was seen just outside the SW corner
of the central hemlock/cedar grove. Seemed ‘big headed’ short-tailed, but
silent and not the best of views looking into the sun. The Barn Owl was
back on it’s usual perch and the Virginia Rail was quietly skulking about
under the brush north of the windmill. 2.1hrs, 44 species.
