We would like to announce a Community Meeting to discuss the ongoing
planning efforts associated with the Subduction Zones in Four Dimensions
(SZ4D) initiative <https://www.sz4d.org/>. This meeting will provide the
opportunity to discuss recent subduction zone science, update the community
on the status of SZ4D, and solicit community feedback on next steps. In
particular, we will be collecting input on near-future opportunities to
seek funding for SZ4D needs. The meeting will be held in Houston, Texas
from November 14-16, 2022. In addition, there will be an early-career event
immediately preceding the meeting on November 13. More information
regarding the Early Career Workshop will be available soon.

It is not necessary that you have worked on subduction zones before to
obtain support, but it is desirable that you identify a connection to SZ4D
for your future career.

We realize that travel to certain parts of the country raises
<https://www.chronicle.com/article/to-boycott-or-not-academic-conferences-face-pressure-to-avoid-abortion-hostile-states>
concerns for some members of our community. Acknowledging these concerns,
the location for the Community Meeting was chosen to balance a number of
competing priorities, including travel accessibility for both US and
Chilean scientists and the availability of an affordable venue large enough
to host the community meeting this fall. We plan to engage members of the
community who cannot travel to Houston by providing opportunities for
virtual participation throughout the meeting. All participants, both
virtual and in-person, will be expected to abide by the SZ4D Code of Conduct

*Application*

This application is both for attendance at the meeting (either in-person or
virtual) and for travel support. Please fill out the form even if you can
support yourself fully or intend on attending remotely. This information
will help us to support the participation of as many as possible, and will
ensure a productive and positive meeting experience.

We also encourage you to complete a second, optional survey with
demographic information to assess the audience we are reaching for the SZ4D
Community Meeting and for supporting diversity in meeting attendees. All
responses are confidential, not tied to any identifiable information, and
will only be discussed in assembled form (e.g. graphs, charts).

The deadline for this application is September 30th. We aim to send
decisions on participation and travel support along with a registration
form in early October. Late registration will be available as space
permits. If additional funding is secured, we will notify additional
participants as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you in November!
