This meeting will provide the opportunity to discuss recent subduction zone science, update the community on the status of SZ4D, and solicit community feedback on next steps. In particular, we are seeking input on near-future opportunities to seek funding for SZ4D infrastructural needs. The meeting will be held in Houston, Texas November 14-16, 2022. In addition, there will be an early-career event immediately preceding the meeting on November 13. We realize that travel to certain parts of the country raises concerns for some members of our community. Acknowledging these concerns, the location for the Community Meeting was chosen to balance a number of competing priorities, including travel accessibility for both US and Chilean scientists and the availability of an affordable venue large enough to host the community meeting this fall. We plan to engage members of the community who cannot travel to Houston by providing opportunities for virtual participation throughout the meeting. Additional details, including registration information, will follow shortly. The anticipated registration deadline to be considered for travel support is October 1st. We look forward to seeing you in November! We hope for participation from all disciplines that collect or use field geoscience data in their subduction-related research. Applications for this in-person workshop are due September 9. Applicants will be notified of the results by mid September. Funding will be available to offset the costs of lodging and travel, with priority given to early career scientists. **Apply here ** When Saturday, 8 October 2022 from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Coffee, snacks, and lunch provided. Where Hyatt Regency Denver at CCC , Centennial Ballroom H. (Hotel associated with the GSA conference) Motivation There is limited infrastructure to support field data collection. Such support is required to collect the large-scale data needed to answer SZ4D research questions , to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, to engage effectively and respectfully with local groups and scientists, and to accelerate the pace of research reliant on field data. The community has expressed needs for: 1) Support for logistical coordination, travel, and instrumentation. 2) Facilities and support for local sample processing and analysis. 3) Management of hazardous activities and emergency situations. 4) Support for the collection, archiving, and distribution of publicly available data and samples. 5) Facilitation of respectful communication and interaction with local stakeholders. What to expect At this pre-GSA workshop, SZ4D seeks input from the scientific community to discuss the needs, opportunities, and challenges in developing a community-based field program, and the infrastructure needed to support such a program. Be prepared to discuss and provide input on questions such as: - What logistical challenges have you had while collecting field data, or while trying to begin field work in a new area? - What types of physical or human resources do field geoscientists need to collect data more efficiently, or need to be able to collect ?big data? sets? - How well do you integrate your field-based science into the work of others in your own discipline or across disciplines? What are the existing barriers to doing this? - If resources were available to help you with the above items via a community research program, what would you be willing to give back to help support that program and its scientific objectives? This virtual workshop will take place over three days with four-hour sessions each day (October 17, 19, 21). The workshop aims to bring together scientists and stakeholders interested in citation and attribution of geophysical data. Participation is encouraged for any scientists and stakeholders interested in shaping the future of data acknowledgement. There is no workshop fee. We ask that you register for the event through the workshop webpage . The goals of the workshop include: Identify approaches for consistent data citation and attribution within the geophysical/geoscience communities in a way that works with most publishers and scientific organizations. Discuss data set licensing options and implications. Contact community@unavco.org ---------------- Virtual Workshop - Geophysical Data Citation, Attribution, and Licensing Announcing a Hands-On Data Resources Workshop for Marine/Solid Earth Geology-Geophysics-Geochemistry Monday 24th - Tuesday 25th October, 2022 Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, Palisades, New York Overview This in-person workshop is focused on providing hands-on experience for accessing geoscience data through publically-available data resources. Held at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, participants will be exposed to a range of useful marine and solid earth geophysics-geochemistry community data tools and resources. Hands-on demonstrations and presentations will be given by data service/tool providers representing these different groups and initiatives: Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS ) Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT ) synthesis EarthChem geochemistry data resources Lamont Core Repository for seafloor sediments IRIS-SAGE national facility for seismological data UNAVCO-GAGE national facility for geodetic data NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NOAA-NCEI ) GeoMapApp Format The hands-on activities of the workshop will be tailored to participant interests. In advance of the workshop, participants will be asked to complete a survey about their current data access needs and habits and to provide a high-level summary of their science and/or education interests. During the event, participants will work in teams to identify a science question or geographical area of interest and will learn to find, assess, and access existing data and resources that could help with their investigations. Teams will be encouraged to develop simple how-to documents for future use that may be shared with others having similar research and education interests. Data service/tool providers will be present throughout the workshop to help guide participants and to answer questions as well as to receive feedback themselves which could lead to changes in data systems and tools to better meet community needs. Workshop Goals Participants will: Access a broad range of freely-available geoscience data tools and resources to help support their research and teaching efforts, and will learn how to discover and access data using these resources. Assess which data tools and resources are of greatest interest and practice using them to address a scientific question. Extend their professional networks through connections with geoscience data system providers and other participants. Provide feedback to data service/tool providers on better ways to meet community needs. Participants Early-career geoscientists (graduate students, post-docs, early faculty) are invited to apply to attend the workshop. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory values diversity, equity, and inclusion. The varied perspectives of a broad range of workshop attendees will produce better outcomes for all. In addition, we encourage early-career geoscientists of all identities, including dimensions such as culture, national origin, ability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status to apply to be part of the workshop. We aim to accept approximately 25 early-career geoscientists to participate in the workshop. Participants will be selected based upon likely beneficial impact from attending the event. Application deadline: 21st September 2022. Successful applicants will be notified soon thereafter. Click here for the Application Form. Logistics Up to $700 (seven hundred dollars) will be available to each participant to help defray the cost of economy air travel and ground transportation to the event. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on both days, and there will be a reception on the first evening. Shared hotel accommodation will be provided at the Clinton Inn Hotel in Tenafly, New Jersey, within walking distance of the downtown area. Attendees needing/preferring single accommodation will have half the overnight room rate covered by the workshop grant. A shuttle bus will bring participants to and from the workshop on the Lamont campus. All participants will be required to perform a rapid antigen COVID test prior to the start of the workshop. Test kits will be provided upon check-in at the hotel. Masks will also be provided and participants will be required to wear masks during the workshop sessions at Lamont and to comply with the prevailing COVID-19 policy of Columbia University at the time of the workshop. Attendees may be required to show proof of vaccinations.
