The community experiment is currently proposed to focus on deployment offshore Alaska and Cascadia, managing data collection, and community training. We aim to have a field deployment as soon as summer 2023. Your help at the workshop will be most helpful in guiding the design and logistical planning! The workshop will be virtual over 3 days between May 2 - 6th, 2022 (Mon., Wed. 12-4 EDT; Fri. 12-2 EDT). There will be limited background information, as participants will be expected to have read through the 2021 workshop report, and ancillary information. Much work will be done during this meeting to decide the ultimate plan for deployment and other activities. Brief agenda includes: Monday -- Refresher on the Instrument Pool and Defining Science priorities for experiment; Wednesday -- Site selection and the community roles for experiment deployment and activities; Friday -- Data/instrument access and processing, community development, and summary discussions/next steps. Please register (preferably by April 22nd) here . We will discuss the current and future SZ4D activities and provide information about how to get involved in the next stage of SZ4D. SZ4D (Subduction Zones in 4 Dimensions) is a community-driven initiative to study the places where Earth?s tectonic plates converge, with a focus on the fundamental processes underlying geologic hazards such as great earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, and volcanic eruptions. The Land- and Sea-Scapes (LS) component of the SZ4D is focused on understanding earth surface processes that give rise to geohazards. > Visit the SZ4D website to learn more about the Land- and Seascapes Working Group and get involved. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Meeting agenda, hotel/travel info, and register by June 6th at: http://iris.edu/workshop Please find below SIG and Town Hall Meeting at the SAGE/GAGE workshop that might be of interest to some or all the SZ4D Community (more on the workshop website): *1) Attend the SZ4D SIG on June 15 to hear progress updates in developing the SZ4D Initiative* *2) Tuesday June 14 | WInSAR town hall meeting* *International fee waivers: Did you know that workshop attendees from lower-income countries are eligible for fee waivers on virtual registration? Virtual registration provides remote attendees with a livestream of the workshop plenary sessions and a virtual poster hall. If you know of friends or colleagues who may be interested in virtually attending the SAGE/GAGE workshop, please spread the word.* ----------------------------------------- *1) SIG SZ4D: Progress in developing the SZ4D Initiative* The SZ4D Research Coordination Networks (RCNs) are in the midst of a multi-year effort to shape plans for an interdisciplinary, multi-agency, and international decadal-scale research effort to study the fundamental processes underlying geohazards in subduction zones. The objective is to convene a broad spectrum of the research community to reach consensus on key elements of such a program, including prioritized science plans, field and laboratory infrastructure, modeling and computational capability, and building equity and capacity efforts. The ?umbrella? SZ4D RCN encompasses about 75 researchers from a wide variety of disciplines working together to formulate the key scientific drivers, envision new transformative data collection facilities, and develop a program to grow the SZ4D community through coordinated efforts that have broader collective impact. In a closely allied effort, the Modeling Collaboratory for Subduction (MCS) RCN is fostering an organized modeling community that can more deeply investigate SZ4D science questions and developing the elements of the infrastructure and science program that rely on simulation. The collective SZ4D team is pursuing multiple funding and development paths toward realization of the goals. The RCN efforts has published a draft Implementation Plan and is seeking to revise it based on community input with a final submission target of Fall 2022. The goal of this SIG will be to inform the SAGE/GAGE community of recent developments in the SZ4D RCN activities and solicit input into the planning process. SZ4D is also seeking SAGE/GAGE community members to help populate a committee governance structure that will be critical in guiding the development of the SZ4D Science Center. ----------------------------------------- *2) WInSAR town hall meeting at the 2022 SAGE/GAGE workshop* Dear WInSAR and UNAVCO members, With the upcoming merger of UNAVCO and IRIS to form the EarthScope Consortium at the end of this year, and the planned launch of NISAR in 2023, WInSAR is at a crossroads - both our internal structure and our position within the broader EarthScope organization need to be defined, along with our scientific priorities and goals for the next few years. Some examples of key questions we face: - What role should WInSAR take in the development of InSAR training courses, instructional material, software, and outreach beyond the InSAR community? - How can WInSAR best advocate for free & open SAR data for the scientific community from all satellites, both public & private? - How can we leverage our existing archive - over 200 TB currently - to increase scientific use of specialized datasets? - Should WInSAR take a stronger role in encouraging open exchange of derived data products (timeseries, etc.), for example through the support of open standards for data & metadata format, as well as hosting, visualization, and provision of DOIs for these datasets? To ensure the InSAR and broader community?s voice is heard during this process, we are organizing a town hall meeting during the 2022 SAGE/GAGE workshop in Pittsburgh, PA (www.iris.edu/workshop). The town hall is open to all interested geodesy & seismology community members, with early career scientists particularly encouraged. It will take place on Tuesday, June 14 (day 1 of the workshop) and will include a catered lunch, so advance registration is requested - please contact workshop@iris.edu to inform us of your interest in attending. Best wishes and hope to see you in Pittsburgh, Eric Lindsey Chair, WinSAR Executive Committee -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: *Dear SZ4D Community, please read below brief updates on SZ4D* The SZ4D (Subduction Zone in Four Dimensions) initiative aims to understand the fundamental processes underlying some of the most destructive geohazards on the planet. SZ4D committees have been busy writing reports , holding community townhalls and workshops , speaking with colleagues, listening to the community, and crafting a plan to transform our science. There is a lot going on. *E-Newsletter coming soon!* We are pleased to announce that starting in May 2022, SZ4D will be launching a regular e-newsletter to keep everyone up to date. Highlights of the first newsletter will include: - A report about the SZ4D-Chile Geological Society Collaborative Workshop . This workshop will be held May 9-11 in the vicinity of Santiago, Chile with approximately 70 Chilean registrants to discuss how we can make progress together. - An open call for volunteers for SZ4D. This is your chance to get involved! We will be seeking new members for the SZ4D Steering Committee, Collective Impact Planning Committee, Facility Committee and other functions of SZ4D. These committees will be making key strategic decisions on proposals and plan starting in Fall 2022. - A roadmap for upcoming meetings , including a planned community meeting for Fall 2022. Feel free to suggest other topics that you would like to hear about (or write about!) in this and future newsletters. Stay tuned and hope to hear from all of you soon! ? https://www.sz4d.org ?
