One way to help move our society in a better direction is through education, engagement, and empowerment. Climate Stewards can be part of the solution to start to reach the over 5 million people in Washington. One goal of the program is to create better informed citizens as cities develop their climate action plans. These stewards can help inform their climate action plans but also are instrumental in building support in their communities for change. There are three ways to contribute: (1) spend an hour sharing your specific expertise to update the curriculum (topics in need are listed below), (2) present on a topic you know well to the pilot group of stewards and (3) lead or help design a field trip that connects impacts to the audience. This ?Climate Stewards? program is led by a colleague at WSU. The curriculum is licensed from UC Climate Stewards Program and is being adapted for WA state. The WA State Climatologist Office is currently helping adapt some of the PNW impacts curriculum. But other topics still need expertise in converting the curriculum from CA centric to WA centric: Curriculum Topics in need of updating for PNW: * Forestry, Firewise Landscaping, and/or Wildfire mitigation * Energy and climate policy, including the Washington Climate policy dashboard * Interconnections between water and energy systems * Health: Health equity and climate, Washington Healthy Places index, Heat Assessment Tool * Health Vulnerability indicators * Indigenous knowledge and environmental stewardship If you have knowledge to share on the above topics as they relate to Washington State and have an hour or so to provide feedback on the curriculum, let me know. Presentations and Field Trips There are also opportunities to present to the first cohorts of studentsin the program come fall, on these and the broader PNW climate topics, and to participate or lead a field trip related to your area of expertise. These opportunities are more involved than the curriculum update and a presentation or field trip could easily serve as a capstone for the Graduate Certificate in Climate Science. The organizers are a very supportive group and are there to collaborate and provide feedback. So much expertise in house, and so much need in the community for deeper understanding. Let me know if you'd like more information. This talk presents a participatory, community-driven model for rural electrification that centers local needs and participation, offering an alternative to conventional technology-first approaches. Drawing from ongoing collaborative research with a growing team of scholars and practitioners, I will outline strategies for integrating participatory demand estimation, flexible system design, and cooperative governance models. The talk will also highlight innovative tools such as gamification-based demand estimation, which supports more inclusive planning by actively engaging communities in articulating their energy aspirations. Hello PCC, You're invited to our next PCC Third Thursdays happy hour! This event will take place in the Biology Greenhouse on Thursday, May 15th from 5 pm to 7 pm. To give us a sense of how many people to expect, if you plan on coming, please RSVP here by Monday, May 12th. What is Third Thursdays? The Program on Climate Change (PCC) Graduate Steering Committee (P-GraSC) is hosting a happy hour with food and drink provided every Third Thursday for the remainder of the academic year. We believe building community among scientists and academics is more important now than ever, and we are doing this in an effort to foster more connections across the climate space here at UW. We aim to create these connections by giving folks from different disciplines a place to come together to chat, eat pizza, and look at cool plants. Who can attend Third Thursdays? All UW graduate students, undergraduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff who work on climate or climate-change related issues, regardless of college or affiliation, are welcome and encouraged to attend. Feel free to forward to a friend who fits that description and might enjoy this event! Note that we are now inviting undergraduate students to attend, so please feel free to share with anyone interested! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the event, and hope to see you there :) Best, Stella Heflin 2024-25 PCC Steering Committee -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm a SAFS graduate student working to help undergraduates navigate the hidden curriculum through the LEAPS program , and I need your help! Next week, we are hosting a workshop focused on helping undergrads navigate their next steps after graduation. We'll talk about finding jobs and the transition into the workforce, why you might choose to apply to grad school, and what life is like as a grad student. For this workshop, I am looking for ~5 volunteers to serve on a panel to provide a diversity of perspectives on your first job(s) after finishing undergrad and on graduate school. *The event will be taking place in FSH 213 from 12:30-1:30 pm on Wednesday, May 28*. If you are interested in serving on the panel, please send me an email and let me know 1) your degree program/department and 2) your year in your degree program. Thanks in advance for your help, and please let me know if you have any questions. We will have snacks :) Thanks, Markus -- Markus Min (he/him) Ph.D. Candidate, Scheuerell Lab School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... From Wed. May 28th to Sun. June 1st, we will begin a public-facing, nonpartisan 100-hour Weather & Climate Livestream , where meteorologists and climate scientists from across the country will give virtual 20-minute talks continuously as we share our work and why it matters for every American. Viewers will get a chance to interact with the speakers via moderated questions. I'm helping organize this, and we still need ~30 speakers to fill our livestream. If you are willing to participate and are a climate scientist or meteorologist whose work has ever been funded in part by the US federal government, please email me directly. Additionally, *we have** an urgent need for someone to fill open slots from 12:30 - 1 am and 1:30-2 am Pacific Time on early Thursday morning*. If you are willing to do this in the name of protecting climate science, please email me ASAP! Additionally, please follow us on Youtube and social media @wclivestream Thank you so much for your consideration!
