Hello PCC grads,
Please see below for a request for someone to work with the CIty Nature
Challenge planning team to bring together a group on UW campus. As
explained below a PCC grad student led the effort last year, with
participation from the Undergraduate Cohort. Is there anyone out there
with plant identification expertise that would want to step into this
project? If so, please contact Lily Peterson (below), and let me know. I
am happy to help rally participants and brainstorm.
Best,
Miriam

Subject: Inquiry about 2025 City Nature Challenge Collaboration
To: Miriam A. Bertram <mab23 at uw.edu>
Hello Miriam,
My name is Lily Peterson, and I am an academic adviser in UAA general
advising at the UW Seattle campus! I also am a biology graduate student,
and on the Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area 2025 City Nature Challenge
planning team.
I am reaching out because I heard from Hemalatha Velappan that the UW
Program on Climate Change partnered with UW Biology and hosted a UW Seattle
Campus City Nature Challenge

event
during last year's observation days. I also heard from Hema that she is
largely out of town this year and not as able to lead organization of an
event, but she pointed to a few partners who might be interested in trying
to put together an event again and is open to support too once she is back
around. I was wondering, at this time do you know if you or others in PCC
this year have any plans to try to host any UW campus event / nature walk
for City Nature Challenge participation? And if not, is that something you
all might be interested in thinking through collaboration on again?
Observation days are end of April again this year over a Friday - Monday.
I was asked as part of the CNC area committee to check in with partners,
and we are actually intentionally exploring how to active college campuses
in getting involved, since college campuses can be such interesting spots
for urban biodiversity recording, are common urban spaces throughout the
Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan area, and this can be a great opportunity for
students to connect with nature too.
Even if capacity to or interest in collaborating on any event this year
might be low, I will also be working with the CNC committee to share about
and rally individual participation and get the word out through campus
partners and collaborators to students even beyond Environment-related
majors and spaces , so if sharing the word is something you might be open
to in too when the time comes, I would also be grateful and can follow up.
Thanks in advance for any insight and consideration and let me know if
there is anything I can clarify or if it might be helpful to set up a time
to touch base at all too.
Warmly,
Lily
