Greetings / Good Afternoon,
On behalf of the Weather Program Office (WPO), I am pleased to share with
you our announcement for the 2025 WINGS Dissertation Fellowship:
NOAA’s WPO and UCAR’s Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth
System Science (CPAESS) have established the WINGS Dissertation Fellowship
for PhD candidates to focus their dissertation research on an area of
scientific importance for the broader Weather, Water, and Climate
Enterprise. This year, the fellowship will be focused on the Earth
Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) and the Joint Transfer Technology
Initiative (JTTI), programs within the OAR Weather Program Office. Project
proposals can focus on:

Data Assimilation (including of current and new operational
observations),
-
Atmospheric Physics and Dynamics,
-
Development of Component and ensemble Models (e.g., land, ocean, ice,
air quality),
-
Land-Ocean-Atmosphere interactions,
-
Air Chemistry,
-
Verification and Validation - Post-Processing,
-
Systems Architecture (coupling, workflow, continuous integration and
development),
-
Tools and techniques to improve the efficiency of weather forecasting
operations,
-
Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, and
-
Software Engineering to advance numerical weather prediction
The WINGS PhD Dissertation Fellowship will be awarded for two years with a
potential extension if approved. WINGS fellows will be UCAR employees and
will receive funding for 0.5 FTE for 9 months and 1.0 FTE for 3 months
(1300 hours per year at an hourly salary of $27.58). WINGS fellows will
also receive an annual travel allowance of $5,000. Additional information
