It is an outreach event that APL-PSC arranged with the Pacific Science Center for many years until the pandemic intervened. APL-PSC is restarting it this year (first weekend in March) and they are looking for some volunteers to help present a few of the exhibits. More detail below. *Polar Science Weekend at Pacific Science Center *is two days of hands-on activities about the polar regions and polar research, presented by UW's Polar Science Center (APL) and other groups. The event will take place at Seattle's Pacific Science Center on Saturday-Sunday, March 2-3, 2024. We are looking for a few volunteers to help with three of the activities. We will train you on what to do -- it's not complicated! This is a fun way to talk to kids and families about science. *We need help with:* *Salinity Taste Test* Just how salty is the ocean? Your tongue will tell you! Come take the World Famous Salinity Taste Test. In this activity, visitors taste samples of water containing different amounts of salt and rank them from freshest to saltiest. They learn about the salinity of the world's oceans. *Sea Ice vs. Freshwater Ice* How is frozen seawater different from frozen lake water? Do an experiment to find out. In this activity, visitors put drops of colored dye on two blocks of ice -- one make with salty water and one made with fresh water -- and observe what happens. *Listening to the Arctic* Eavesdrop underwater to the sounds of whales and seals in the Arctic Ocean. What are they saying? In this activity, visitors put on headphones connected to a tablet and select short sound recordings of whales and seals. A spectrogram of the sound clip is displayed on the tablet as the recording plays. We also have photos of the animals. Interested or have questions? Message-ID: Hi PCC Grads, On behalf of the 2024 Graduate Climate Conference (GCC) Co-Chairs, I am excited to announce that this year's conference is returning to *Pack Forest, Washington*! GCC is a unique, interdisciplinary climate conference run entirely by graduate students, for graduate students. The first Graduate Climate Conference was organized by graduate students from the Program on Climate Change (!) in 2006. Since then, the conference has alternated between UW and MIT and the organizing committee has expanded to include students from many different institutions inside and outside of the US. *We are looking for UW graduate students who are interested in joining the 2024 GCC Organizing Committee.* This is a great opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at how a conference comes together as well as to connect and collaborate with graduate students from other institutions. Since GCC is returning to UW's Pack Forest this year, having UW graduate students involved in the planning process will be essential to its success. We are especially hoping to have UW students involved in the conference logistics, transportation, social events, and audio/visual committees (see attachment for a brief description of each committee). If you are interested in joining the Organizing Committee, *please fill out the following survey by next Wednesday (2/21)*: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeMLCV8v3I3b3i64IxT_fPyO96zrXwRw8ZNuLsZL2C8kAWaA/viewform You can find more information about GCC and last year?s conference at this link: https://graduateclimateconference.github.io/about/ and any questions can be sent to gradclimateconference@gmail.com Lastly, if you are interested in attending but not planning GCC, be on the lookout for a registration email in late spring! Would you please help us circulate these amongst your students? Applied Research Fellowship Program : This program is open to* undergraduate and graduate students*! The Fellowship Program supports multidisciplinary teams of students to work on real-world population health challenges. The project is in collaboration with Public Health Seattle King County. The team will consist of three graduate students and two undergraduates, with supervision by a faculty expert. The project team receives training in research skills and data collection, analysis and presentation to deliver a work product that meets the external client?s needs. The team will build on the work of previous fellows to explore business changes by employee size, business type, and whether the company is publicly or privately owned. They will also examine the spatial distribution of business closures and openings across King County, placing that data in the context of other demographic characteristics. This research will enlighten stakeholders to potential impacts on business stability and diversity amongst communities in King County over time. *We are hosting an info session on March 4th from 12-1PM. Please RSVP here .* Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship program : This program is open for *graduate students* to start submitting applications! The Social Entrepreneurship Fellows allows students to explore how best to deploy social enterprise models for innovations that are developed by University of Washington researchers. This is a 10 week program over the summer. Four fellows will be selected from across a variety of disciplines and investigate a range of projects. The projects are focused on finding innovative ways to maintain the balance between financial sustainability and social impact in addition to generating revenue.
