Message-ID: Hello! Students Explore Aquatic Sciences (SEAS) is excited to invite you to showcase your aquatic research at our annual spring Aquatic Sciences Open House on Saturday, May 18th, 2024 from 10 am - 4 pm. What is the Aquatic Sciences Open House? The Open House is open to the public and offers a free and family-friendly day of hands-on learning to celebrate science and research that relates to water. We?ll have hands-on activities led by current UW students, staff, postdocs, and faculty across the College of the Environment and by organizations from the greater Seattle area. How can I get involved? If you and your lab or student group would like to showcase your aquatic research to a broad audience of all ages, please use this form to reserve a booth/room. If you have previously completed the form from our Save the Date email, you do not need to re-submit. Priority will be given in the order that groups fill out the form; please complete the form by Friday, April 19. Hosting a booth at the Open House is a wonderful opportunity to inspire the next generation of aquatic scientists and enthusiasts and hone your skills in interpreting your work for a K-12 audience. Haven't presented your research to K-12 students before? Email me at jhstern@uw.edu, and we can brainstorm ways to make your research, or the scientific concepts related to it, accessible and fun for kids of all ages. In addition to booth hosts, we will need several volunteers to ensure the event runs smoothly. Please use this form if you are interested in volunteering. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. We look forward to having you at the Open House! About ACORN In addition to supporting community goals, ACORN projects enable students to enrich their research experience, broaden their networks, and apply quantitative, analytical, and communication skills beyond the boundaries of their primary academic focus. ACORN projects typically involve a time commitment of about 3 hours per week over the course of a year for each graduate student or postdoc volunteer. Prior experience related to the topic of each ACORN project is a plus, but is not required. Visit our website for more information on ACORN and current ongoing projects! About the Project The Seafair Climate Action Coalition strives to bring climate awareness to Seattle?s annual Seafair celebration. The coalition currently includes Veterans For Peace-Daniel Ellsburg chapter, Xtinction Rebellion, and South Seattle Climate Action Network. The Seafair celebration includes a military airshow by the US Navy?s Blue Angels that contributes to growing carbon emissions, air pollution, and noise pollution that can pose health risks to local residents. This project will contribute to an understanding of the climate and health impacts of the Seafair air show. Directions may involve researching and summarizing the emissions and pollution profile of airshows using manufacturing specs, federal agency data, and other related peer-reviewed literature. Students may also investigate evidence-based strategies that could increase public and community organizational awareness. The summarized findings will be used by the Seafair Climate Action Coalition in its outreach and in communication with decision-makers and the public. This project will particularly interest students/postdocs with, or looking to gain experience in one or more of the following. * Identifying and interpreting policies of government and private entities (e.g. climate plans and pledges) * Researching and summarizing fuel consumption, carbon emissions, air/noise pollution profiles, safety and health impacts of Seattle SeaFair and/or military air shows. Previous understanding of emissions profiles encouraged. * Science communication, including creating materials communicating technical topics to broad audiences Please reply to indicate your interest in working on this project by Friday, May 3rd and include your CV/resume along with a brief description of your background as it relates to the project.
