This working group will diversify the voices influence the design of CMIP in current and future phases. Researchers, scientists, and practitioners early in their career provide a unique insight into climate science, have the potential to offer a fresh perspective on CMIP and have historically been underrepresented in the CMIP governance teams. ECRs* regularly undertake the often time-consuming task of generating, downloading, processing, and analysing data from CMIP and have a unique, working insight into the successes and flaws of CMIP phases. Fresh Eyes on CMIP will be a new working group comprised of scientists, researchers, and practitioners in the early stages of their careers to sit alongside the *CMIP7 task teams* . Fresh Eyes on CMIP will also work to significantly increase collaborations with scientists working in the global south. *ECR Definition Whilst many different definitions of ECRs exist, we want to emphasise that identification of career stage differs greatly across different people?s careers. Therefore, our definition of early career researchers (ECRs) are master and PhD students, researchers, and practitioners are simply those who are in the early stages of their career. Typical definitions of ECRs suggest this period is within seven years of obtaining their highest degree (excluding career breaks). We will not impose this strict time definition but include it for reference. Application is open to all scientists, researchers, and practitioners in the early stages of their career. Practitioners are those working at the interface of society, policy, practice, and research. Objectives of the group Whilst the individual proposal topics from Fresh Eyes on CMIP will be led by the group members once in place, the overarching aims of the group are to 1. Integrate the voices of scientists early in the career into CMIP to provide an invaluable working insight into the generation, access, and analysis of CMIP data, 2. Engage ECRs in the broader scientific and research community intersecting academia, NGOs, private sector, and Governmental institutions, 3. Work with the *CMIP International Project Office* (IPO) on identifying avenues for reducing the carbon footprint of CMIP., 4. Act as liaison contacts for the *CMIP7 Task Teams* , *CMIP Panel* , and *WGCM Infrastructure Panel * (WIP) and submit proposals to the panels when suitable How to apply Application to the Fresh Eyes on CMIP group are now open, and will remain open for one month until 2nd June 2023. Application requires filling in a short form which asks for a statement of experience and statement of motivation. >From the membership applications received, we will also be searching for two co-leads for the group. Please indicate if you are particularly interested in being a co-lead. We are always trying to improve our way of working to be more inclusive and equal. Solving problems as difficult as those in climate science requires having representation of all voices at the table. We therefore encourage applications from all who are interested, regardless of background, gender, nationality, or seniority. We also encourage applications from all who are interested, no amount of experience with CMIP is too small! Access the full call text by *following this link* . Access the application form on the *Fresh Eyes on CMIP webpage* . *We are really excited about this new initiative and would like the opportunity to be extended as widely as possible. This year the topic was determined through a combination of input from the PCC community, including voting at the Spring Welcome event, and broader considerations of past and future topics by the PCC board . We are very excited to announce that Aaron Donohoe , Senior Research Scientist, Polar Science Center, APL, has signed on as lead organizer of this years' Summer Institute. Special mention here, that beside Aaron's polar science expertise, as a graduate student in Atmospheric Sciences in 2006 he was instrumental in the creation of the first, now very popular, Graduate Climate Conference (GCC). *2023 PCC Summer Institute* *Theme: Climate Change at the Poles* *Organizer: Aaron Donohoe (Senior Research Scientist, Polar Science Center, APL)* *Dates: Sept 11 to Sept 13* *Location: Friday Harbor Labs on San Juan Island* The PCC covers room and board for 75 participants--roughly half the participants are graduate students and postdocs and the balance are faculty, research scientists and invited speakers. Five external speakers will be invited to join us to share their areas of expertise and there will be lots of time for conversation over meals and exploring San Juan Island on Tuesday afternoon. We ask that all attendees join with the intention of participating in all sessions. So, save the date! Registration and additional details will be available in early summer. The position will be based at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. This is a 2-year position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023. Background: The Haskell Foundation, which supports Haskell Indian Nations University, is the fiscal-sponsor for the Rising Voices, Changing Coasts (RVCC) Hub, a large-scale, 5-year project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The RVCC-Hub is seeking a recent Ph.D. graduate in an interdisciplinary degree, including education with a focused interest in coastal Indigenous Peoples and interdisciplinary and convergence science research. The RVCC Hub will create a space for convergence of disciplines and epistemologies where Indigenous knowledge-holders from diverse coastal regions will work with university-trained social, ecosystem, and physical Earth system scientists and students on transformative convergence research to address coastal hazards in the contexts of their communities. Indigenous partners in the RVCC Hub are not subjects, but co-creators of the convergence science created through the Hub activities. The RVCC-Hub goals are to 1) co-create convergence research with social and earth sciences and Indigenous Knowledges to improve modeling and prediction of coastal processes that support decision making by Indigenous communities around mitigation and adaptation; 2) develop a successful, inclusive framework for cross-cultural convergence research that can be adopted and adapted by future research collaborations; 3) broaden participation amongst Indigenous students and researchers, and train a new generation of diverse convergence research scientists; 4) increase administrative and technological infrastructure to support current and future research with and by Indigenous scientists and communities. The place-based research is focused on four regions: Alaska (Arctic), Louisiana (Gulf of Mexico), Hawai?i (Pacific Islands), and Puerto Rico (Caribbean Islands). This position is designed to produce the next generation of scientists in the field of coastal research and resilience and build ethical and sustainable co-created research partnerships. A strong interdisciplinary background in education and social sciences, Indigenous studies, and/or evaluation is desired, as well as enthusiasm for such work. In particular, this post-doctoral researcher will work on Indigenous curriculum development and on-site program support. A good understanding of both traditional ecological knowledges and Indigenous knowledges, and Indigenous educational epistemologies is desired. Ideal candidates will have some knowledge of Indigenous/American Indian educational histories, methods, and methodologies. The postdoctoral researcher should be equally comfortable working with a range of identities that include Native and non-native scientists and educators at major R1 research universities and scientific organizations, as well as tribal colleges and universities, and TEK/IK -holders in rural Indigenous communities; therefore, an appreciation and understanding of both research settings - scientific labs and community environments ? is desirable. Preferred experience with developing curriculum, including experiential and place-based learning, creative ways of teaching focused on popular education, evaluation and assessment and some logistical needs. This position provides a unique opportunity for an early career postdoc scientist to play a crucial role in the development of convergence science research on one of the most pressing issues on the planet today, climate change and its impacts on coastal Indigenous Peoples. Responsibilities will include curriculum development supporting the Hub?s undergraduate/graduate student internship programs, including Indigenous curriculum development and experiential place-based learning opportunities, on-site support during the summer programs such as writing coach and research mentoring, pre-program communications and organizing, working closely with the programs? instructors and Haskell Foundation and Haskell Indian Nations University staff, and engaging in evaluation and assessment of the programs. This position is based at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. Salary and Benefits: The starting salary for this position is $61,800 annually, plus health benefits. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation. CCA wants to learn more about the audience, what motivated them to attend the event, if/how they are involved in climate action and more. At the same time the hope is that this will be a conversation, with students also sharing what they are thinking about w.r.t climate. Your research, how you are engaged or would like to be engaged in addressing the climate crisis. Come get connected. Please share with anyone you think would be interested in attending, learning more, and/ or volunteering. Interested? Have questions? Contact Mary Manous (marymanous@gmail.com) . Cascadia Climate Action organizes Climate Science on Tap panel discussions to build community understanding of, and engagement with climate change, its related causes, impacts, and solutions. Generally, the discussions are held at breweries and tap houses, open to all ages, and bring out energy and climate scientists, engineers and policy experts, to share their knowledge and experience. Volunteer supported, the format fosters networking, learning, and action while being a great deal of fun! -- Miriam Bertram, PhD Assistant Director, UW Program on Climate Change mab23@uw.edu @CliEdMiriam Pronouns: She/Her Profile -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
