Washington Sea Grant works with other departments and federal and state agencies to research, communicate, and provide outreach on the use and conservation of the marine environment and its resources. Within Washington Sea Grant, Crab Team monitors the occurrence of the invasive European green crab in Washington waters. This is done using baited traps, so we have an annual bait party to cut and bag hundreds of pounds of mackerel for bait. In order to accomplish this big job, we need your help. There are plenty of volunteer tasks ranging from cutting, weighing, and bagging fish. It can get a bit messy, but there are a few tasks for which you can avoid handling fish as well, if that's not your thing. This year's bait party will be on *Wednesday, 2/22,* *Friday, 2/24,* *Wednesday, 3/1* and *Friday, 3/3* from *9:00AM - 5:00PM* at the *Old Hatchery in the UW Fisheries Center (FIS) *which you may also know as the Portage Bay Building. Too harsh? 3) In what kinds of jobs does one have to be careful about such things? 4) Are there things the scientist could have done to make a similar point that would have been permitted, without getting fired? We have received a request from Hari Pathanjaly of Northgate High School for an interviewee. As part of a Senior Project, Hari is researching on climate change and some practical steps individuals can take to help reduce its impacts. This is a great opportunity for you to engage with our broader community and practice your science communication skills. The specifics are outlined below: * 3 people with expertise (or interest) in climate change. * Interested people will be interviewed about climate change and how individuals can contribute to reduce the impact. * Date and time: any day between February 20 and March 14, 2023 (flexible to suit interviewees? schedules). * Location: Zoom If you are interested in volunteering for this opportunity, please let me know by March 8, 2023, and I will choose volunteers in order of responses to this email. When you email, I will confirm your interest and connect you and other volunteers with the high school senior working on this project. Thanks! To: Program on Climate Change [image: unnamed.png] Dear Colleagues, University of Washington faculty and students conducting research in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are invited to apply for Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium's 2023 Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). We will match qualified undergraduates and faculty applications but will also accept applications from faculty and students already working together. Participating faculty contribute a portion of the student stipend. This summer, we also have an excellent opportunity for UW graduate students to join us as graduate student leaders of SURP. This is a chance for graduate students to gain experience mentoring undergraduates while continuing to work on their own research. SURP seeks to increase research opportunities for undergraduates on NASA-related STEM projects, and we particularly welcome applications from students with traditionally marginalized genders and from underrepresented minoritized communities. *Applications are open now and will close March 31, 2023. Application details, stipend rates, and program eligibility information can be found on our website . A recorded program info session is also available here . Further questions can be directed to nasa@uw.edu . * *Eli Heller, M.Ed. *(He/Him/His) *Student Services Manager* Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium [waspacegrant.org] University of Washington AERB 241A | Seattle, WA | 98195-2400 Phone: 206-543-8919 | Email: hellere@uw.edu ---------------------------------------------------------- *Schedule an Appointment: **Advising Hours Calendar* General Office Hours: 8:30am ? 5:00pm, Teleworking (Mon / Friday) *UW Colleagues: Feel free to contact me on MS Teams during work hours.* -- "The University of Washington acknowledges the Coast Salish peoples of this land, the land which touches the shared waters of all tribes and bands within the Suquamish, Tulalip and Muckleshoot nations." @uwpcc pcc.uw.edu uwpcc@uw.edu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please distribute as appropriate. There is an undergrad and a grad section. Thank you so much everyone! [image: verson 2 SEFS 512_ESRM 490 2023 Poster.jpg] *SEFS 512 or ESRM 490 C:* *Biogeochemical Cycling in the Environment* Full flyer attached. This course will provide an overview of ?the biotic controls on chemistry of the environment and the geochemical controls of the structure and function of ecosystems? (Howarth R. W. 1984). This will include the elemental cycling of major components of local and global biogeochemical cycles. Topics will include exploring the transfer of energy and nutrients within terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the interactions among sources of nutrients to each ecosystem. The movement of the elements of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and sulfur (S) will be evaluated, along with their incorporation into other minerals and solutes as they transfer from the atmosphere, through terrestrial ecosystem and into aquatic systems over both short and long timescales.
