This truth has been more than highlighted by Russia?s war in Ukraine. Issues surrounding energy are critical to security relationships and are central to all considerations of climate change and its impacts. Join *Nick Touran *, Ph.D. a nuclear engineer, and *Scott L. Montgomery* , M.S. an energy policy expert for a conversation on essential developments related to the Energy Transition and its geopolitical realities. Following the conversation, there will be time for audience Q&A. Energy use is by far the largest source of climate-warming gases, which means every one of us is directly involved, and in a position to do something positive. While there are changes to the way we live that can make a difference, it is also the way we think, our level of understanding about progress on non-carbon options, including nuclear fission and fusion, that will prove essential. Come hear a conversation between two experts in energy-related fields on the status of these options and how you might be able to get involved. Ocean Planning Assistant, Department of Ecology, Lacey, WA Good morning! We have an exciting opportunity that we wanted to share: The *Shorelands and Environmental Assistance * (SEA) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an Ocean Planning Assistant (Environmental Planner 2) position. This position is located in our *Headquarters Office* in Lacey, WA . In this exciting opportunity, you will get to work with a broad range of scientists, resource managers, planners, and policy leaders to help guide Washington?s marine spatial planning effort. In 2018, Washington State finalized a Marine Spatial Plan for Washington?s Pacific Coast that was developed to protect ocean resources and minimize conflicts with potential new ocean uses. A large amount of data and information was collected as part of the Marine Spatial Plan development process, however, there is a need to update and collect new data that will help with emerging needs and implementation. You will work with Ecology and other state agencies in their effort to identify, acquire, and make available high priority data that help protect and preserve Washington?s valuable ocean and coastal resources. In addition, you will support ocean planning efforts more broadly as part of Washington?s Coastal Zone Management Program. *What you will do:* ? Inventory and analyze existing ocean data, and identify high priority data and information needs for ocean resource planning and management. ? Work with researchers and scientists to acquire new and updated data, and explore partnerships and funding opportunities for additional research and data collection. ? Coordinate the preparation of an ocean research agenda, identify data gaps, and complete a collaborative prioritization process for addressing data gaps. ? Collaborate with a small team of ocean and coastal planning staff to develop policy and procedural documents related to Washington?s Marine Spatial Plan and the establishment of a Geographic Location Description for Washington?s Pacific Ocean waters. ? Assist with coordination between tribal, local, state, and federal agencies on various Marine Spatial Planning tasks, including data sharing and efforts to address data gaps and research needs. ? Attend meetings with state agencies, stakeholders, and federal, state, and tribal governments as needed and provide briefings on data prioritization, needs, and funding opportunities. Alternatively, do you find aspects of the process of choosing a journal mysterious? Then this workshop is for you! We will discuss the process and considerations for choosing a written venue for your work. Topics covered will include how to identify an appropriate audience for your results, choose a journal that caters to that audience, and craft a manuscript with both audience and target journal in mind. This workshop will use examples from AGU journals, but the discussion will be general enough so that participants will gain the skills necessary to choose an appropriate journal far outside of the AGU journal family. Please bring pencil/paper to the workshop (I?ll bring extras for those who forget). Throughout the workshop we will focus on addressing the questions and concerns of students and postdocs, but all are welcome to participate. The workshop will be led by Caitlin Whalen, a physical oceanographer at the Applied Physics Laboratory and an editor for Geophysical Research Letters. -- Caitlin Whalen Senior Oceanographer, Applied Physics Laboratory Affiliate Assistant Professor, School of Oceanography University of Washington -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am designing an independent study focusing on how businesses approach climate risk and would be interested to talk to any students or faculty at PCC about the program and connecting to students with similar interests.
