Dear all,

Are you interested in creating and running a science table at the* Aquatic
Sciences Open House on Saturday May 4, 2-5p* , co-hosted by the School of
Oceanography and School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences? For now, save the
date and email Hannah Glover (hglover at uw.edu) to let us know if you MIGHT
BE INTERESTED. We will provide more details and eventually ask for a firm
commitment. Hosting a table at the event and event attendance is free!

Please pass this opportunity along to others who might be interested. More
details are provided below and I am happy to answer any questions.

Best,
Hannah
(UW ARGO/SEAS outreach team)

*What is the Aquatic Sciences Open House?*
The Aquatic Science Open House is a freeform celebration of work and
research that relates to water. The event is held in and around the Fishery
Sciences and the Ocean Sciences Buildings at the UW. The general public,
with a focus on kids and youth, is invited to walk around to different
tables and tour labs. Some tables will be run by graduate students, some
from science organizations in the community. Tours of the UW fish
collection and the RV Carson will also be offered.

*What is a science table?*
A science table is a table/station where volunteers facilitate learning
through an activity, props, tools, games, manipulatives, etc. Anything that
will help kids learn something or start asking questions in a new way. Some
format ideas include:
- Develop an activity/game that explains current research
- Pull out some of your gear, let people see, touch, or try out equipment
- Display some specimens or photographs that relate to your scientific
process

*Who will be attending?*
General public; families, kids, teens from the Seattle area.

*Who is running this event?*
This event is being organized and managed by a joint SAFS-Oceanography
graduate student group. Our goal is to provide aquatic science learning
opportunities to K-12 students in the greater Seattle area. We will be
working hard to promote the event among the organizations we work with,
particularly in communities that are under-represented in STEM fields.
