UW SAFS is currently accepting applications for an instructor in FISH 552
Intro to R Programming & FISH 553 Advanced R Programming in Autumn Quarter
2017 - current UW graduate students and post-docs are encouraged to apply.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
FISH552 and FISH553 introduce graduate students, primarily in aquatic and
fishery sciences or other natural sciences, to the R statistical programming
language. FISH552 is offered in the first five weeks of the quarter, and
FISH553 in the final five weeks of the quarter. Most students take both
courses (2 credits each). The courses are run as combined lecture/labs, with
lectures interspersed with practical exercises in a computer laboratory. The
class is offered as credit / no credit. The candidate selected for this
position will be responsible for teaching both courses, with TA support.
Materials for the course are well developed.



POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The appointee will serve as the primary instructor and coordinator for Fish
552 and 553. Duties will include;

* Organize and lead instruction of class and laboratory sections
* Maintain regular office hours for student consultation
* Supervise teaching assistant (non-UW student only; if selected
candidate is UW graduate student, assisting TA will be supervised by SAFS
faculty)
* Supervise the administration of the classes, including maintenance
of instructional website, allocation of grades, delivery of course related
materials

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

* MSc (PhD preferred) degree, with a strong emphasis on quantitative
sciences. A background in natural sciences is preferred. Currently
registered UW graduate students will be considered
* Advanced knowledge in the use of R and R programming in scientific
data management, processing and presentation. Background in supporting
software (especially RStudio) is preferred
* Experience in teaching at the University level, ideally leading and
coordinating instruction
* Strong communication and organization skills, and ability to work
collaboratively with faculty, student teaching assistants, and staff
* Strong technology skills and an interest in natural systems
* Availability for the full period during which the course is offered

Graduate Student Assistantship
