Performance, Energetics, and Condition of Polar Marine Mammals: Assessing Survivability of These Ecosystem Sentinels in Light of Climate Change

University of Washington, Future of Ice Initiative Seminar

To survive and reproduce, marine mammal must hold their breath, dive deep into the darkness, and consume adequate prey, which is patchily distributed and ephemeral. At the same time, they encounter energetic demands associated with thermoregulation and locomotion. The ability to meet these high energetic demands may be compromised with increased human and environmental perturbations, especially at the poles where climate change effects are most pronounced. Small body size and underdeveloped physiology of young animals and the energetic costs of reproductions for females makes these groups most at risk for starvation, which can have profound population consequences. I investigate age-specific limits to performance and age-specific energetic requirements to assess the flexibility of marine mammals to alter behavior as will be required to survive in their changing ecosystem. Monitoring how regime shifts impact marine mammal populations is important because these top predators serve as ecosystem sentinels.
