no doubt many of you are already in the know about the AGU Data Visualization and Storytelling Competition <https://education.agu.org/grants/data-visualization-storytelling-competition/award-information/> open to undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. citizens.
the themes are:
· 2015/16 El Niño
· Extreme events and natural hazards
· Innovative use of new and emerging technologies
the deadline for submissions (teams of up to 3 students allowed) is 15 September 2016.
some pretty impressive data visualizations and videos have come out of CoEnv students over the past few years, and i’m hoping many of our students leap into this challenge.
the prizes are rather impressive as well!
grand prize winners (5 in total) get:
1. $2,500 travel grant to attend 2016 AGU fall meeting, and one free meeting registration
$2,500 travel grant to attend an earth and space science meeting in 2017
$1,00 travel stipend to visit a NASA center to collaborate with NASA scientists in 2017
the opportunity to “tell their story” via NASA Hyperwall at the 2016 AGU
runner-up winners (5 in total) will get:
$1,000 travel grant to attend 2016 AGU fall meeting, and one free meeting registration
as GPAs, GPCs, chairs/directors, and data viz/story-telling cognoscenti, i’m hoping you will encourage students to get creative and apply! please also know that john meyer, our science communication go-to person in the dean’s office, is standing by ready to help students think through/highlight the compelling storytelling pieces of their work. john has great experience, and has run science communication (hone your message!) workshops for faculty and students alike.
