OSB 425

Speaker: Alexandra Brewer, Master's Candidate at the University of
Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment
Title: Science Doesn't Matter: Inside the 2014 Climate Negotiations in Lima,
Peru

Abstract:
We know that science behind anthropogenic climate change is indisputable,
and the global impacts will be severe; why, then, has the global community
been so behind in addressing it? The United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the formal global climate negotiations, and can
be an inscrutable process from both the inside and the outside. This seminar
will provide a nuts and bolts overview of the UNFCCC and outline of the
global climate negotiations process using examples from the most recent
climate conference in Lima, Peru. It will highlight some of the political
sticking points and road-blocks that keep global policy from following what
science is telling us to do, and hopefully provide some avenues for science
to influence the process.
