Hey all -
Kristin Laidre and I are looking for someone to do some summer science - either a grad student or advanced undergrad. Please get in touch if you might be interested or know someone else who might be. Definitely an opportunity to contribute to a publication on narwhals and Greenland glaciers. And please feel free to forward widely.
Work opportunity: Narwhal whales and Greenland glaciers
We are looking for someone for a summer project at the Polar Science Center, Applied Physics Lab (on the westside of the UW campus). The project will involve spatial analysis of whale movements in coastal Greenland in relation to ice sheet outlet glaciers. Work will be done to look at data from whales, fjord/ocean/sea ice conditions, and glacier characteristics. The applicant should be proficient with Excel, ArcGIS or QGIS (mapping, measuring, spatial analysis), and R or Matlab, and familiar with using imagery (this study will primarily use Landsat), as well as a quick learner with attention to detail.
Start date is approximately June 2014 with at least 20 hr/week (this is flexible if someone is interested in additional work hours). Pay dependent on experience. Contact Kristin Laidre (klaidre at apl.washington.edu) or Twila Moon (twilap at uw.edu).
