Minority communities have disproportionately higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease which contribute to organ failure and the need for an organ transplant. Over 100,000 people are currently on the national transplant waiting list, with more than 60 percent representing racial and ethnic minorities. This National Minority Donor Awareness Month, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): * Demonstrates the need for more organ, eye, and tissue donors within multicultural communities. * Provides donation education and outreach materials. * Encourages donor registration. * Promotes healthy living and disease prevention to decrease the need for transplantation. Database: HRSA Maternal and Infant Health Mapping Tool The Maternal and Infant Health Mapping Tool, developed by the HRSA Maternal and Child Health Bureau, is an interactive online resource that provides county-level data on maternal and infant health indicators such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and access to prenatal care. Data is available for AI/AN, Asian, Black, Latino, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and multi-racial populations. This tool was designed to help federal, state, local, and Tribal decision-makers and others visualize maternal and infant health factors to understand existing needs and target resources. Health Literacy Pre-K - 12 and beyond Developing personal health literacy-the ability to find, understand, and use health information and services-should start early in life. The resources from the CDC can help childcare providers, early childhood educators, K-12 (kindergarten through grade 12) teachers, and university faculty recognize and respond to students'-and their family members'-health information and communication needs. ________________________________ Network of the National Library of Medicine, Region 5 (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and U.S. Territories and Freely Associated States in the Pacific) University of Washington Health Sciences Library, Seattle, WA https://nnlm.gov/ | nnlm@uw.edu | 206-543-8262 Region 5 Facebook Region 5 Twitter Region 5 Instagram Region 5 LinkedIn Region 5 blog -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
