Awards
Alan Chait Excellence in Mentoring Awards
[Greg Morton]Dr. Gregory Morton, research professor (Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition) is the 2024 research recipient of the Alan Chait Award for Excellence in Mentoring<https://bit.ly/3PIqEMK>. Two awards are given out each year, one for research and one for clinical (Dr. Tiffany Nguyen received the 2024 clinical award, announced last week).

Honoring Dr. Chait's two passions - teaching in the clinical setting and providing mentorship for trainees in the research setting - this award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to mentorship, teaching, and professionalism for trainees.

Call for nominations: William J. Bremner Endowed Mentorship Awards
Nominations are currently open for the William J. Bremner Endowed Mentorship Awards, to honor faculty members for their contribution to the scientific, educational, and patient care missions of the Department of Medicine through exemplary sustained and high impact mentorship. Two awards are given annually to recognize excellence in mentorship. Faculty in all promotion tracks at the rank of associate professor and above are eligible to be nominated. Faculty news
New faculty welcome and orientation
New faculty who have joined the Department of Medicine since October 1, 2024, are welcomed and encouraged to attend a new faculty welcome and orientation workshop. Topics include career development perspectives and resources, clinical programs introduction, and opportunities and resources for educators. Breakout sessions will be available based on career interests. We are offering two sessions: Oct. 9, 1-4:30pm and Oct. 31, 8:30-12pm. Both sessions will be held on the UWMC-Montlake Campus, South Campus Center 301. Research news
Science in Medicine Lectures
[Rachel Issaka and Anne Manicone]Since its launch in 1976, the Science in Medicine Lecture Series<https://bit.ly/4pcS5iS> has recognized the School of Medicine faculty research achievements and provided an opportunity for researchers to explore topics outside of their immediate fields. Speakers are nominated by members of the School of Medicine scientific community and final selection is determined by a committee of peers from the Council on Research and Graduate Education (CORGE).

Congratulations to Dr. Rachel Issaka, associate professor (Gastroenterology), who will present the New Investigator Lecture on Nov. 20, 2026, and Dr. Anne Manicone, professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) who will present the Science in Medicine Lecture on Feb. 12, 2026.

Scientific Discoveries Research Funding
[Andrew Hsieh and Joshua Veatch]The Andy Hill CARE Fund has awarded over $10 million in the first cycle of Scientific Discoveries Research<https://bit.ly/4g6OBKg> grants, including awards to Drs. Andrew Hsieh, professor (Hematology and Oncology) for "Understanding the role of somatic mosaicism in bladder cancer initiation and the therapeutic response" and Joshua Veatch, assistant professor (Hematology and Oncology) for "T cell intrinsic IL-12 signaling for adoptive T cell therapy of cancer."

These grants support innovative and meritorious cancer researchers and teams pursuing scientific discoveries and breakthrough ideas in the fight against cancer. This opportunity will not only catalyze the next breakthroughs in cancer research but also may help bridge early discoveries and commercialization of therapeutics, devices, and tools to lessen the burden of cancer.

Dr. Justin Bullock, assistant professor (Nephrology) is lead author of "Numbers Ain't Neutral: A QuantCrit Analysis of the Relationship Among Stereotype Threat, Threat Mitigation, and Identity Safety<https://bit.ly/4lUwIzC>" in Academic Medicine. Barbara Jung portrait unveiling
Former Department Chair Dr. Barbara Jung will be present for the unveiling of her portrait on Sept. 8, 8:30am, in Turner Auditorium. Light refreshments will be served. Please stop by to view the portrait and reconnect with Barbara and Betsy. Following the event, the portrait will be displayed outside the Chair's office in the RR-wing of Health Sciences on the 5th floor, alongside portraits of previous department chairs.
