DEIB news UW Medicine climate survey - deadline extended The deadline to complete the UW Medicine Inclusive Climate Survey has been extended to July 11. This is your opportunity to share your experiences to help identify areas for improvement and prioritize actions to foster a more inclusive environment for all. The results of the 2025 survey will guide our efforts moving forward, and we hope to increase the response rate from 39% to 60%. The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Clinical news Outstanding Heart Failure Care Team Award The Harborview Community Heart Failure Program (CHFP) has been recognized by the Heart Failure Society of American (HFSA) as the 2025 Outstanding Heart Failure Team. CHFP is a multidisciplinary healthcare team that engages with patients in the community by conducting visits where patients prefer to get their care. The program functions as a low barrier, high access service providing heart failure management to patients who may not feel safe or welcome in traditional medical settings. They help patients navigate the complexities of chronic illness while prioritizing autonomy and individual choice. Learn more about the program. Research news Kuni Foundation Grants [Bruce Clurman, Hootie Warren]Congratulations to the following DOM members who received awards from the Kuni Foundation's Discovery Grant program to support early-stage research in developing promising new treatments. Dr. Bruce Clurman, professor (Hematology and Oncology) will use a three-year $1,050,000 Kuni Foundation grant to develop a multi-lab approach to search for better therapies for HPV-negative head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), a type of head and neck cancer that is particularly resistant to treatment. Dr. Edus Houston (Hootie) Warren, professor (Hematology and Oncology) will use his three-year, $1,050,000 Kuni Foundation grant to determine whether a particular type of T cell that can specifically recognize and attack RCC tumors can be identified in patient tumors and then expanded in a laboratory setting while retaining its disease-fighting characteristics. A total of eight grants went to Fred Hutch/UW researchers and DOM faculty are collaborators on several (Philip Greenberg, Sara Hurvitz, Peter Nelson, and Scott Tykodi). Learn more about the projects from Hutch News. ________________________________ Innovation Catalyst Award [Taylor Coston]Dr. Taylor Coston, fellow (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) is the recipient of the Innovation Catalyst Award, a divisional award designed to provide funding for the development of innovative ideas and preliminary data related to advanced lung diseases. Its primary aim is to support early-career researchers who have not yet secured independent R01-level funding, offering them resources to generate new data that can be leveraged in future grant applications. ________________________________ Interdisciplinary Academic Partnership Award [Jeanne Gall?e]Dr. Jeanne Gall?e, postdoctoral scholar (General Internal Medicine) and Dr. Gabriel Cler (Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences) have received an Interdisciplinary Academic Partnership Award from the UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS). They will collaborate on a project called, "Acoustic Characteristics of Prosody in Stroke and Neurodegenerative Disease." These awards are designed to encourage and support the formation and development of partnerships in projects that address critical transitions in translational research in innovative ways, with the potential to become long-term collaborations showing a deep commitment to a common goal. ________________________________ [Elizabeth Phelan]Population Health Initiative grant Dr. Elizabeth Phelan, professor (Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine) is part of an interdisciplinary team that has received a Tier 3 pilot grant from the UW Population Health Initiative for their project "Implementation and Evaluation of Fall-related Injury Prevention Strategies in the Lummi Nation." ________________________________ Funding opportunities: ITHS catalyst and voucher awards Catalyst Awards provide "just-in-time" resources especially to early career investigators looking to complete a project or collect pilot data for a larger grant application. Investigators can receive a maximum of $5,000 (direct costs only) toward the purchase of supplies or core services not provided by ITHS. The ITHS is also offering "in kind" service vouchers in support of outstanding translational research. The early investigator voucher awards support the research efforts of junior investigators. Application deadlines for both awards is July 7.
