The investigators also found that drugs approved for other conditions can thwart this detrimental side effect of interferons. Researchers examined the activity of a gene that responds to interferon and is also associated with kidney disease. This gene, called APOL1, has mutations that are common among people with African ancestry. "We saw in the organoids that interferon caused APOL1 levels of expression to go up. But we also noticed that the interferon itself was associated with an inflammatory form of cell death in blood vessels' endothelial cells - even in the context of normal levels of APOL1," said Dr. Benjamin Freedman, associate professor (Nephrology), the study's senior author (lead author is Dr. Benjamin Juliar, postdoctoral scholar). Research news Secret to tamping down GVHD may lie in microbial genetics The genetic variety of our microbiome may be a missing component of graft-vs.-host disease, according to preclinical work from Fred Hutch investigators. They found that after bone marrow transplant, donor T cells can zero in on bacterial components and exacerbate GVHD independently of how closely the genetics of donor and recipient match. [cid:image014.jpg@01DAC3FB.26E12D70] The results were recently published in the journal Immunity. Dr. Albert Yeh, acting instructor, is lead author and Dr. Geoffrey Hill, professor (Hematology and Oncology) is senior author. This is a highly prestigious 5-year career development award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation totaling $570,000. The title of his award is "Clustering and immunophenotyping of acute pulmonary exacerbations of cystic fibrosis." His mentoring team includes Chris Goss and Kathy Ramos (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) and Sonya Heltshe (Pediatrics). Collaborators include Pavan Bhatraju and Pradeep Singh (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) and Nicole Mayer-Hamblett (Pediatrics). ________________________________ Could your medical record predict cardiac arrest risk? [cid:image018.jpg@01DAC3FB.26E12D70]Until now, known risk factors for cardiac arrest have been limited to cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension and high cholesterol. Dr. Neal Chatterjee, associate professor (Cardiology) is lead author of a recent study that identifies a range of new factors - for instance, single marital status and alcohol and substance abuse - that also are highly associated with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). "Our current understanding of risk for cardiac arrest is based on data collected decades ago in populations that don't necessarily represent our diverse communities today. There is a scientific need to better understand the factors underlying this public health problem," Chatterjee said. The study employs machine-learning models scoured electronic health records of more than 1.5 million patients to pinpoint factors associated with OHCA. The key to this phenomenon, Fred Hutch scientists discovered, is the mineral magnesium. [cid:image020.png@01DAC3FB.26E12D70]"Our study really reveals a new mechanism with the potential to explain how bacteria might acquire antibiotic resistance during polymicrobial infections," said lead author Dr. Phoebe Hsieh, postdoctoral fellow in Fred Hutch's Malik Lab and the University of Washington's Dandekar Lab. Dr. Ajai Dandekar, associate professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine) is co-senior author of the paper recently published in PLoS Biology. Read the full story from Hutch News. Research news Department of Medicine Research Dashboard We are thrilled to announce the launch of the UW Department of Medicine Research Dashboard, a powerful new tool designed to enhance our department's research efforts. The dashboard provides a comprehensive visual representation of research grant proposals and awards submitted and obtained by faculty from 2016-2023. This data can be easily explored by individual faculty members, trainees, staff, divisions, or the entire department, offering valuable insights for: * Internal tracking of extramural grant applications and funding * Facilitating collaboration and supporting mentorship by enabling searches for grant proposals and awards by topic and methodology To help navigate and maximize the utility of this new resource, we will be hosting office hours for data queries and assistance on July 15 and August 14, 12-1pm. In the meantime, please direct any questions to Michael Dudley. We believe the Research Dashboard will be a transformative tool for the department's research endeavors. We encourage you to explore the dashboard and discover the valuable insights it can provide. (Please note: VPN is required to access the dashboard for remote/non-UW internet connections. Answers to dashboard FAQs may be found on our intranet.) ________________________________ [cid:image009.jpg@01DAC976.63528FD0]Kuni Foundation Grants Congratulations to the following DOM members who received grants from the Kuni Foundation to propel adult oncology and cancer vaccine research. Adult oncology research * Drs. Shailender Bhatia, professor (Hematology and Oncology) and collaborators Lisa Tachiki, assistant professor, and Manoj Menon, associate professor (Hematology and Oncology) are testing a markedly lower-dose plus reduced-frequency strategy of the immunotherapy drug nivolumab, to potentially make the drug available to patients who would otherwise not have access to the drug. * Dr. David Hockenbery, professor (Gastroenterology) and collaborators are unraveling a marsupial medical mystery. They are studying Tasmainian devils in hopes of developing a therapy that could one day make tumors disappear. Learn more from Hutch News. Cancer vaccine research * Dr. Denise Cecil, research scientist (Hematology and Oncology) is developing a vaccine for ovarian cancer prevention. The vaccine will target proteins that are found at high levels in STIC and ovarian cancers, helping train the immune system to create an immune response to eliminate them. * Dr. Mary (Nora) Disis, professor (Hematology and Oncology) is collaborating with Dr. Miqin Zhang (UW Institute of Nano-engineered Systems) to develop an advanced nanovaccine to combat breast cancer. * Dr. Shaveta Vinayak, associate professor (Hematology and Oncology) is addressing the unmet medical needs of patients with PD-L1-negative triple-negative metastatic breast cancer. Vinayak and the CVI team will conduct a clinical trial in patients with PD-L1 negative metastatic TNBC with the STEMVAC vaccine. Learn more from the Cancer Vaccine Institute. ________________________________ Study crystallizes distinct kidney benefits of common drug [Dr. Katherine Tuttle]In May, researchers announced the landmark finding that semaglutide, the compound in the common diabetes and weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, also effectively reduced risks of kidney and heart complications and death in people with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. It was "the biggest win yet of a completed trial for kidney disease," said study coauthor Dr. Katherine Tuttle, clinical professor (Nephrology). This week, Tuttle and her colleagues published a related finding that shows semaglutide's benefit is distinct from that of another class of drugs shown to be highly kidney-protective, sodium-glucose transport protein 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, including the medications Jardiance, Farxiga and Invokana. [Drs. Thomas Hawn and Dr. David Horne]Researchers from DOM - Drs. Thomas Hawn, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) and David Horne, associate professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) - and Dr. Shwetak Patel (Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering) received a grant for a pilot study that aims to use wearable sensors to classify TB infection based on cough characteristics in real-world settings. The primary aim will be to collect continuous data with lab test ground truth to create an ML model diagnosing TB infection that is robust across situationally diverse conditions. Secondarily they will explore the use of biometrics from Fitbit data, and the use of generative AI as ways to create a more robust classifier. Learn more on our news site.
