Research news New endpoint in multiple myeloma could mean faster drug approvals [Rahul Banerjee]A few months ago, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration voted to accept a new endpoint - MRD, or measurable residual disease - for accelerated approval of treatments for multiple myeloma. "This is good news for patients, says Dr. Rahul Banerjee, assistant professor (Hematology and Oncology). It's a much more sensitive endpoint. When MRD is used as a clinical trial endpoint it means the FDA can approve a drug sooner and we can get it into the hands of patients faster." Read the full story from Hutch News. Research news New gene therapy for muscular dystrophy offers hope [Dr. Jeffrey Chamberlain]A new gene therapy treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) shows promise of not only arresting the decline of the muscles of those affected by this inherited genetic disease, but perhaps, in the future, repairing those muscles. The results were published this week in Nature. Senior author Dr. Jeffrey Chamberlain, professor (Medical Genetics) has worked his entire career on finding therapeutics and seeking a cure for muscular dystrophy. What has stymied researchers in the past is the gene which needs to be fixed "is the largest gene in nature," Chamberlain noted. Up until now, there was no way to deliver the needed protein fixes into the muscles and their genes. "Think of having a king-sized bed delivered that you can't get through your door," he said. He runs clinical trials that harness these novel agents to treat blood cancers, especially chronic lymphocytic leukemia and lymphoma. Shadman says immunotherapy is "a game-changer for our patients" and that immunotherapy services are expanding to meet demand. Shadman is the new medical director of the Bezos Family Immunotherapy Clinic, taking the helm from Dr. David Maloney, who retired after serving as the clinic's first medical director since 2016 when the clinic opened. Shadman discusses his vision for the future of immunotherapy in a Q&A from Hutch News. This multi-PI project aims to fill an important knowledge gap: what are the upstream pathways that drive the chronic production of type I interferons (IFN-Is) in immune cells and in skin in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)? Elucidating these pathways would enable the development of more effective and potentially much safer new treatments for this disease. Dr. Mustelin has also received an R21 for "Alternative splicing and expression of transposable elements in aging skeletal muscle" (DOM co-I is Dr. Rayan Najjar). ________________________________ [Dr. Lauren Pollack]Congratulations to Dr. Lauren Pollack, acting instructor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) who is a 2024 American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Research Scholar. Colorectal cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers among Veterans, and each year VA diagnoses approximately 4,000 new cases. The PSA is just one part of VA's ongoing effort to educate on the importance of colorectal cancer screening. [Jason Dominitz]"Colorectal cancer screening is so important. It detects polyps early, preventing cancer, and finds cancer when it may still be curable," said Dr. Jason Dominitz, professor (Gastroenterology) and VA national executive director of gastroenterology. "Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in America and this PSA reflects VA's dedication to educating Veterans about the importance of regular screenings." Clinical news International Medical Graduates and the physician workforce [Oliver MCELVANEY]Despite there being overall more physicians in the workforce than 10 years prior, data suggest that there is still a shortage of physicians in the U.S. - an issue that can result in difficulties accessing care. International medical graduates (IMGs) represent a crucial part of the solution to these challenges, offering both expertise and diversity to the physician workforce. A recent article published in JAMA highlights the various barriers that exist for IMGs seeking to further their training or practice in the U.S. The paper, by Dr. Oliver McElvaney, second year Pulmonary and Critical Care fellow, and Dr. Graham McMahon, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, also emphasizes the benefits that IMG clinicians and applicants to training programs bring to the profession.
