Call for nominations: Turck Award
Nominations are currently open for the Department of Medicine Marvin Turck Outstanding Teaching Award. This is a career achievement award to honor individuals whose long-term contributions have defined departmental standards for patient care and teaching.

This award celebrates Dr. Marvin Turck, whose energy, enthusiastic teaching, remarkable clinical knowledge, humor, and support for students, housestaff, fellows, and faculty inspired learners and faculty for over 50 years.

MLK Day rally and march
[cid:image005.png at 01DA3FF1.0F448D30]In recognition of Martin Luther King Day, the Department of Medicine Diversity Council, in partnership with UW Medicine, welcomes support and participation in the MLK Day rally and march<https://bit.ly/3X6PdF8> on Jan. 15.

The event will commence at Garfield High School, and DOM participants will meet at the bottom of the stairs in front of the Garfield High School auditorium at 12:15pm for the march (additional workshops are also available earlier in the day).

Call for nominations: Scholar Awards
We are currently accepting nominations for the Chair of Medicine, Diversity Academic Development and Fialkow Scholar Awards. Nomination deadline for all awards: April 1, 2024.


  *   The Chair of Medicine Scholar Award<https://bit.ly/3GIkuq1> provides support (primarily PI salary support) for promising senior fellow/acting instructors to be appointed as physician-scientists at the rank of assistant professor.

  *   The Diversity Academic Development Scholar Award<https://bit.ly/3AbPH2J> assists highly qualified and meritorious trainees at the rank of senior fellow/acting instructor and/or acting assistant professor in their transition to the roles of clinician-scholar, physician-scientist, research-scientist, and principal investigator (PI) as newly appointed assistant professors.


  *   The Fialkow Scholar Award<https://bit.ly/3FCdzNW> recognizes and supports a junior faculty member (assistant or research assistant professor), with a primary appointment in the Department of Medicine, who shows outstanding promise as a scholar.

Clinical Research Methods course
Fellows interested in clinical research are invited to join a fast-paced comprehensive course in clinical research methods. This 11-week course (March 4-May 20) will teach fundamental concepts of epidemiology and biostatistics with direct application of these methods toward the interpretation of contemporary biomedical research. The course will combine out of class reading and video content with in-class problem solving sessions and journal article appraisal. Dr. Eric Larson, affiliate professor (General Internal Medicine) is senior author of "Effect of Personalized Risk-Reduction Strategies on Cognition and Dementia Risk Profile Among Older Adults: The SMARRT Randomized Clinical Trial<https://bit.ly/48mObe8>" in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Dr. Pandora (Luke) Wander, associate professor (General Internal Medicine) is co-lead author, and Dr. Kristina Utzschneider, associate professor (Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition) is senior author of "Associations of plasma sphingolipids with measures of insulin sensitivity, β-cell function, and incident diabetes in Japanese Americans<https://bit.ly/3vir2Lo>" in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases.
