Research news Immune cells vs. metastasis: 'It's a numbers game' [cid:image009.jpg@01DA4571.26EB8080]New research published this week cracked an important code in the quest to prevent metastatic cancer. Co-led by Fred Hutch metastasis researcher Dr. Cyrus Ghajar and immunotherapy expert Dr. Stanley Riddell, professor (Hematology and Oncology), the research explains why the body's natural immune system doesn't eliminate disseminated tumor cells lying dormant in bone marrow or other sites and offers three potential T-cell immunotherapies that actually do. Somewhere between 20% to 30% of early-stage breast cancer patients go on to develop metastasis, or stage 4 disease, after early-stage treatment (others, known as de novo metastatic patients, are diagnosed stage 4 from the start). And while metastatic cancer is treatable - sometimes giving patients many extra years - it is still not curable. Ghajar, Riddell and other researchers are engineering a handful of immunological workarounds to basically smother tumor cells in their sleep. Read the full story from Hutch News. Education news Asylum Evaluation Student Clinic [cid:image021.png@01DA4AE9.0F2EED60]The Asylum Evaluation Student Clinic is a student-run, faculty-supervised initiative through the UW School of Medicine that provides free, safe, trauma-sensitive forensic evaluations for asylum seekers in Washington state. Department of Medicine faculty involved in the project are Dr. Alexandra Molnar, clinical associate professor (General Internal Medicine), who serves as the clinic's faculty advisor and an evaluating physician, and Dr. Margaret Isaac, associate professor (General Internal Medicine), a volunteer evaluating physician. "The students have worked incredibly hard to bring together an amazing service for asylum-seekers in our region," Molnar said. "At every juncture they have thought creatively and thoroughly about what asylum-seekers need and how we can serve them best. I continue to be in awe of the outstanding work that the students bring to this very vulnerable population." Learn more on our news site. Research news App to detect tuberculosis [cid:image022.jpg@01DA4AE9.0F2EED60]UW researchers and engineers are trying to develop a smartphone app that can tell the difference between tuberculosis (TB) and other respiratory diseases. Their findings were published Jan. 3 in Science Advances. Researchers collected over 33,000 coughs from 149 patients with TB and from 46 patients who had other respiratory illnesses. They then fed audio of the coughs, collected through various microphones, into a machine-learning model called TBscreen, which the researchers had developed. They found that the app and a smartphone mic predicted which coughs signified active TB at a better rate than more expensive microphones. In creating the machine-learning model, researchers used only involuntary coughs, which are quite different from prompted ones, noted Dr. David Horne, associate professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) and senior author of the paper. They found that the smartphone recording had an 82% accuracy rate of predicting TB. "This would be a rapid way of screening who might have TB," said Dr. Thomas Hawn, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases), and co-author of the paper. Well-being news DOM Reconnection, with birds! Join your colleagues for a morning of birding in the Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA). Led by birders in the department, this recurring (monthly) event is open to all students, staff and faculty in the DOM and guests as space allows. [cid:image010.jpg@01DA506E.D1F3C750] Meeting on Saturday morning, the bird-curious, novice birders and nature lovers will join experienced birders for a 3-hour introduction to birding in the Union Bay Nature Area of the UW, northeast of Husky Stadium. With over 200 species identified there, the UBNA is a premier birding hotspot in King County that can be birded all year round, with the kinds of birds seen varying by the season. Birding is a slow-paced activity that allows ample time for group members to get to know each other. Birding has proven to be an excellent activity for stress reduction and facilitating mindful practice. Our inaugural outing will be Saturday, Feb. 10. A limited number of binoculars will be available for those who do not have their own. Contact Mark Tonelli with questions or to sign up.
