Jeff Chamberlain receives 2024 MDA Legacy Award
[cid:image006.jpg at 01DA55F1.38834FE0]Dr. Jeff Chamberlain, professor (Medical Genetics) is honored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association with the 2024 Legacy Award for Achievement in Research, for his achievements in translational research.

The MDA Legacy Award for Achievement in Research is an annual recognition for outstanding accomplishments in neuromuscular disease research. This is the MDA's highest award for contributions to the fight against muscular dystrophy.

Seeking new members for the Gender Equity Council
[cid:image008.png at 01DA55F1.38834FE0]The Gender Equity Council (GEC) is seeking motivated faculty and staff to join the council. As a member of the GEC you will advise the department chair on matters related to gender equity, make recommendations to ensure an equitable and inclusive environment in the department, and plan and implement activities that promote gender equity.

Your term would begin July 1, 2024 and last 1-3 years. The time commitment includes at least 3 full GEC meetings annually along with additional subcommittee meetings as needed.

Faculty news

Dr. James Sze, clinical instructor (General Internal Medicine), hospitalist at the VA Puget Sound, was recently sworn in as a captain in the US Army Reserve, assigned to the 7451st Medical Operations Readiness Unit (MORU).

As of Friday, January 26, Sze is now a captain in the US Army Reserve, having taken his Oath of Commissioned Officers at the VA.

[cid:image012.jpg at 01DA55F1.38834FE0]Dr. Suzanne Watnick, professor (Nephrology) has been chosen as the inaugural Scholar in Residence for the American Society of Nephrology. She will spend 2024 advocating for improvements in kidney care, working with national stakeholders such as the US Department of Health and Human Services, patient care organizations, research entities, and clinician groups. Watnick aims to focus on overdue innovation needed for people with kidney disease.


Staff news
Spotlight on staff well-being
[cid:image014.png at 01DA55F1.38834FE0]Supporting the well-being of our community is among the highest priorities of department leadership. As part of our strategic plan, a dedicated working group composed of both staff and faculty was established to lead the department's efforts to support well-being.

This work group conducted four focus groups in March 2023. A total of 24 staff members participated and represented a variety of divisions, roles, and lengths of service. Some common themes and areas for improvement emerged.

Clinical news
First TAVR cases performed at VA
[cid:image016.jpg at 01DA55F1.38834FE0]The VA Puget Sound TAVR program successfully launched on Monday, January 29 by the VA Cardiology and Cardiac surgery teams. The TAVR team performed two TAVR procedures, and there was an overwhelmingly positive sentiment from the team.

[cid:image018.jpg at 01DA55F1.38834FE0]Dr. Anita Chopra, clinical assistant professor (General Internal Medicine) is the physician lead for the Long COVID Interest Group, an effort to share knowledge and experience in managing post-COVID conditions and to explain the latest research in the area. The Long COVID Interest Group welcomes new members interested in getting involved.

Nora Disis passes directorship of ITHS to John Amory
[cid:image020.png at 01DA55F1.38834FE0]This month, after twelve years as founding director, Dr. Mary (Nora) Disis, professor, (Hematology and Oncology) will pass the directorship of the UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) to Dr. John Amory, professor (General Internal Medicine).

Amory's first years of leadership will be dedicated to building on the success established over the twelve years of Disis' tenure.

Ojo, research professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) was awarded a R01 grant by NIH/NIAID for his research study titled "Development of dual effective kinase inhibitors as syndromic treatment of Giardiasis and Cryptosporidiosis". The goal of the project is to discover kinase inhibitors that could be developed as oral multi parasite effective therapeutic against cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis diarrhea with potential usefulness in other intestinal parasitic diseases. The total cost is $3,910719.00. Allergy and Infectious Diseases Co-investigators include Dr. Wesley C. Van Voorhis.

DOM Reconnection, with Birds!
Join your colleagues for a morning of birding in the Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA). Led by birders in the department, this recurring (monthly) event is open to all students, staff and faculty in the DOM and guests as space allows. Our inaugural outing will be Saturday, Feb. 10.
