These reductions were measurably greater than those experienced by the cohort of clinicians who received a placebo instead. Findings from this double-blind, randomized clinical trial were published this week in JAMA Network Open. ?For doctors and nurses who feel burned out or disillusioned or disconnected from the patient care they want to provide, this study shows that psilocybin therapy is safe and can help these clinicians work through those feelings and get better,? said Dr. Anthony Back, professor (Hematology and Oncology) and the trial?s lead investigator. Research news Underrepresented in Medicine Research Award [cid:image015.jpg@01DB47F6.6D13E970]Dr. Addie McClintock, associate professor (General Internal Medicine) was recognized with the Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Research Award, by the by the AAMC Research in Medical Education (RIME) Program. She received the award along with Drs. Joshua Jauregui and Caitlin Schrepel (Dept. of Emergency Medicine) for their project: ?You Get What You Reward: A Qualitative Study Exploring Medical Student Engagement in Two Different Sociocultural Assessments.? Their findings show that assessments can impact engagement, and therefore, how and what you learn. Their multi-institutional, cross-sectional constructivist-grounded theory study of fourth-year undergraduate medical students also included UWSOM students. The study found that students? beliefs about the purpose of assessments, the mental effort assessments require, and their relationships with faculty and peers all play a big role in how they engage with the assessment process. Assessment systems that empower students to have some control over their own learning promote a growth mindset and cultivate student engagement by communicating that if you are learning, you belong. ________________________________ Clinical Research Intensive Summer Program (CRISP) Applications are now being accepted for CRISP, the Clinical Research Intensive Summer Program, which provides clinical investigators with hands-on experience and key clinical research skills to accelerate their career development. "This study was born out of our clinical observations that if we could get a low socioeconomic patient over the transplant access barrier, their survival outcomes were equivalent to individuals with higher socioeconomic status," said lead author Dr. Natalie Wuliji, acting instructor (Hematology and Oncology), who presented the study at ASH. "With this analysis confirming our initial theory, we can now take steps toward solving the challenge of transplant access." Events of interest Quiet week: December 23-27, 2024 As we continue to rebuild resilience and focus on mental health, we would like to preserve department-wide quiet weeks throughout the year. During these weeks, we hope that individuals can limit non-essential meetings to recharge and reflect, as well as thoughtfully minimize emails. We realize that this will not be possible for everyone, but encourage all to take breaks when they are able. 2025 quiet weeks: * February 17-24 * April 7-11 * August 4-8 * November 24-28 * December 22-26 Weekly Calendar, December 23-27, 2024 Our events calendar is posted on our website. ________________________________ Amy Fields, Editor amyf@uw.edu [cid:image012.jpg@01DB52F7.2B9CAED0][cid:image013.jpg@01DB52F7.2B9CAED0][cid:image014.jpg@01DB52F7.2B9CAED0][cid:image015.jpg@01DB52F7.2B9CAED0][cid:image016.jpg@01DB52F7.2B9CAED0] To subscribe/unsubscribe from this list, go to: https://mailman1.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/domweek ________________________________ Privileged, confidential or patient identifiable information may be contained in this message.
