Faculty spotlight: Kathryn Treit
[cid:image004.jpg at 01DAFAF9.BCA9B450]Dr. Kathryn Treit, clinical associate professor (Nephrology) is the new medical director of the UW Outpatient Dialysis program effective September 1, 2024.
She returns to UW after 8 years as the medical director of the Home Dialysis Program at the Northwest Kidney Centers.
"Dr. Treit is an outstanding clinician, a compassionate provider, strong advocate for access to home dialysis, and committed to advancing care of socially marginalized communities," said Dr. Rajnish Mehrotra, professor and head (Nephrology). "We are thrilled to welcome her back to UW."

Research news
[cid:image006.jpg at 01DAFAF9.BCA9B450]Dr. Gina Kim, clinical assistant professor (Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine) has been awarded a grant through the Building Trust Through Diversity, Health Care Equity, Inclusion, and Diagnostic Excellence in Internal Medicine Training program.
Fifteen medical schools and health systems across the United States have received awards as part of the 'Building Trust' grant program to improve medical education and training to build a more trustworthy health system.
Kim leads a new study aimed to reduce language barriers in healthcare by assessing and improving utilization of interpreter services at Seattle-area skilled nursing facilities.

[cid:image008.jpg at 01DAFAF9.BCA9B450]Dr. Linzee Mabrey, acting instructor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) has received a K23 mentored patient-oriented research career development award through the NIH-NHLBI for $932,040 for 5 years for her project: "Targeting CD14: A Novel Therapeutic Approach for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome."
Her mentoring and advisory team includes Drs. Mark Wurfel, Eric Morrell, Chris Goss, Carmen Mikacenic (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine), Nick Johnson (Emergency Medicine), and Leila Zelnick (Nephrology).

New study aims to evaluate a novel pediatric TB diagnostic tool and treatment response
[cid:image010.jpg at 01DAFAF9.BCA9B450]Dr. Sylvia LaCourse, associate professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) leads a new five-year study titled "CRISPR-TB for pediatric TB diagnosis and treatment response" funded by the National Institutes of Health will support an evaluation of a CRISPR-based technology to target and detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis cell-free DNA (cfDNA). The study's findings may provide a deeper understanding of its potential to diagnosis pediatric TB early and accurately and improve treatment responses.
