Thomas Lynch, professor (Hematology and Oncology) and Juliana McElrath, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) who are among the new class of members elected to the Washington State Academy of Sciences. Lynch was elected for being part of a research effort that found mutations in the cell-surface protein epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which plays an important role in helping lung cancer cells survive. Today, drugs that target EGFR can dramatically change outcomes for lung cancer patients by slowing the progression of the cancer. McElrath is recognized for her seminal contributions to developing validated laboratory methods for interrogating cellular and humoral immune responses to HIV, TB and COVID-19 vaccines, which has led to the analysis of more than 100 vaccine and monoclonal antibody trials for nearly three decades, including evidence of T-cell immune responses as a correlate of vaccine protection. Education news Integrated Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Fellowship [cid:image026.jpg@01DAE4F5.79019C00]We are pleased to announce ABIM approval for the launch of an official Integrated Geriatric and Palliative fellowship. This two-year program leads to board certification in both specialties and allows for up to eight months of protected time for scholarship and development as a leader. "At this time when healthcare for older adults and those with serious illness needs rapid improvement, this program is set to provide the training needed to have the greatest impact," said Dr. Kate Bennett, associate professor (Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine) and program director of the new fellowship, along with Dr. Lianne Hirano, clinical associate professor. Dr. Gina Kang, clinical assistant professor, will be the faculty lead for the track. "We have a long track record of collaboration between the two fellowship programs (Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine), so are eager to take this to the next level to provide this fully integrated training. The combination of geriatrics and palliative medicine, leadership training, and academic skills will graduate trainees who have exponential impact on the lives of older adults in our health system, region, and nation." Applications are currently being accepted for a July 2025 start. Please reach out to Dr. Bennett with any questions. ________________________________ CLIME Educator Network: Call for faculty The Center for Learning and Innovation in Medical Education (CLIME) has launched the CLIME Educator Network: a database of faculty throughout WWAMI who are passionate about strengthening teaching skills and committed to building teaching excellence at the UW SOM. Research news BRCA1/2: Why men should be screened for the breast cancer gene [Heather Cheng]They are genes commonly associated with breast cancer in women, but in fact men who carry certain mutations in their BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are at higher risk of developing certain types of cancer themselves. These risks for men traditionally have been under-recognized, but newly developed national screening guidelines offer hope for identifying the cancer risk of BRCA mutations in men through genetic testing and tailored cancer screening, according to a recent article published in JAMA Oncology. Dr. Heather Cheng, professor (Hematology and Oncology) led the study. This finding emerged in a study published this month in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. The UW Medicine-led study followed 1,538 patients for three years. Participants underwent cognitive tests at intervals of three, 12 and 36 months after their hospitalizations. "For the last two or three decades, there has been a growing recognition and concern of the long-term physical and cognitive consequences after hospitalization," said lead author Dr. Pavan Bhatraju, associate professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine). "Caring for patients in the hospital, we have noticed some patients have declines in cognitive function after leaving the hospital and we were wondering why this happens." During this quarter, workgroups demonstrated exceptional collaboration and dedication to advancing our strategic priorities. Key highlights include the following: * Research: The launch of the DOM Research Dashboard represents a significant advancement in research data visualization and analysis. This tool provides valuable insights into research trends and performance. Office Hours to discuss data queries is on Aug. 14, 12-1pm, via zoom. * DEI: The DEI workgroup hosted a successful Diversity Council Annual Retreat, focusing on critical topics such as identity safety, restorative justice, and community engagement. This event underscored the department's commitment to fostering a more inclusive environment. * Professional Development: The Professional Development workgroup achieved a major milestone by awarding the first DOM staff scholarships. With $10K dispersed to 7 awardees, this initiative supports employee growth and professional development for qualifying continued education costs including workshops, certifications, educational courses and materials. Applications are accepted twice annually in April and October. * Well-Being: The Well-being workgroup secured approval to pilot a remote well-being coaching program across three divisions: Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, and Cardiology. This innovative initiative aims to enhance employee well-being and support work-life balance. * Education: The Education workgroup is developing a proposal to recognize teaching efforts and to increase teaching awards within the department. Education news Visiting student spotlight: Rebecca Mindel [Rebecca Mindel]Our Visiting Scholars Program welcomes Rebecca Mindel, 4th year medical student at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who begins her four-week internal medicine elective at UW Medicine this week. Rebecca chose UW Medicine for her visiting elective because of the strong focus on primary and preventative care as well as the emphasis on clinical research. She is particularly excited about community interventions for clean air being implemented through DOEHS to improve cardiovascular and pulmonary health. ?Four days in, I?m already inspired by UW efforts to serve patients across urban and rural areas throughout the state,? she said. Learn more about her on our news site. Research news [Andrew White]Community feedback helps doctors discuss errors with patients In the United States, medical errors cause an estimated 250,000 deaths a year and affect about 10% of all hospital patients. Unfortunately, most patients don?t get the information or emotional support they need after a harmful error ? in part because few physicians receive training in this communication skill. In a study published last week in JAMA Network Open, resident physicians? communication skills improved with a smartphone-based test in which laypeople provided scoring and feedback. The study involved seven U.S. residencies spanning several states. The 146 participants were second-year residents in internal medicine and family medicine. All received an initial lecture about how to talk with patients about clinical errors. ?We wanted residents to have a playbook to anticipate patients? reactions to hearing about an error,? said Dr. Andrew White, professor (General Internal Medicine) and lead author. ?A large part of success in these conversations is related to identifying the emotions that each individual patient has. Feelings like sadness, anger, disbelief, despair. The language we use in these situations needs to align with those emotional responses and communicate understanding, acknowledgment and comfort. There?s some preferred phrasing, but doctors need to be able to think on their feet.?
