Division spotlight: Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine
[cid:image003.png at 01D9E26E.7B09CCA0]As part of our 75th Anniversary, we are spotlighting each of our divisions over the course of the year, in the order they were established. The Division of Respiratory Diseases was founded in 1965 by Dr. John Butler and later renamed the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Sleep Medicine was added to the division name in March 2017. The division is internationally recognized for the rigor and breadth of their training program, clinical expertise, and innovative research.

Congratulations to Dr. Gregory Raugi, professor emeritus (Dermatology) who was awarded a VA Connected Care Distinguished Leaders Award for his work in teledermatology. He was recognized for his exemplary efforts in leading the implementation and expansion of telehealth technologies to provide Veterans with care when and where they need it.

Deadline extended: Gilliland Award for Excellence in Teaching
[cid:image007.jpg at 01D9E26E.7B09CCA0]Nominations are open for the Bruce C. Gilliland Award for Excellence in Teaching of Residents and Fellows. The Gilliland Award is awarded annually to the faculty member who is actively engaged in clinical and didactic training or in the implementation of a graduate medical education curriculum. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in teaching over time and must have served for at least three years within UW Medicine or an affiliated training site as a teacher of residents and/or fellows. The Nomination<https://medicine.uw.edu/about/awards/gilliland> deadline has been extended to Sept. 29.

Medicine Grand Rounds
[cid:image011.jpg at 01D9E26E.7B09CCA0]Dr. Donna Washington will present "Health equity in the VA - Lessons learned from a learning health care system" at Medicine Grand Rounds<https://medicine.uw.edu/grand-rounds> on Friday, Sept. 15, 2023,12-1pm,Turner Auditorium and via zoom<https://washington.zoom.us/j/812197730>. Dr. Washington is a general internist, professor of medicine at UCLA, and a core investigator at VA Health Service Research & Development Center for the Study of Healthcare Innovation, Implementation, and Policy.

She leads the VA's Health Equity QUERI National Partnered Evaluation Center, which partners with VA's Office of Health Equity in using a population health approach to examine health, healthcare quality, experiences, and outcomes of vulnerable Veteran populations across the VA healthcare system. Her approaches demonstrate how social determinants of health among racial-ethnic minoritized Veteran groups can undermine even our best models of care.

[cid:image013.jpg at 01D9E26E.7B09CCA0]Dr. Nisha Bansal, professor (Nephrology) was awarded a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Investigator Award to Support Mentoring of Early Career Researchers from Diverse Backgrounds (K26). The purpose of this award is to provide protected effort and resources to established NIDDK-funded mentors to provide high quality mentoring to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from diverse backgrounds, including those from underrepresented groups.

[cid:image015.jpg at 01D9E26E.7B09CCA0]Dr. Andrew Stergachis, assistant professor (Medical Genetics), presented "Comprehensive, integrated long-read genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic characterization for solving the molecular basis of Mendelian conditions" at the Advances in Genome Biology and Technology (AGBT) Precision Health Meeting.

This work highlights the use of his FiberSeq technology to solve the etiology of a complex Undiagnosed Disease Program<https://undiagnosed.hms.harvard.edu/apply/> case.

Faculty bootcamp: Back to the bedside

Topics include balancing autonomy and supervision, teaching procedures, coaching on physical exam and presentations, addressing racism and bias, and maximizing bedside teaching efficiency.
