Massry for his scientific achievements and his contribution to the kidney healthcare community and to the National Kidney Foundation. Faculty news Dad's mission in Korea inspires cardiologist's research [picture of Dr. Eugene Yang and his father, Yang Sung-chul]Early this month, Dr. Eugene Yang, clinical professor (Cardiology) and other UW Medicine representatives shared a conference table with South Korea's minister of health and welfare and other delegates from the nation. Yang had worked behind the scenes to get a Seattle stop included in the visitors' tour of U.S. healthcare systems. The diplomatic endeavor no doubt gratified Yang's dad. Yang Sung-chul, 83, is a former South Korea ambassador to the United States (2000-03) and member of that nation's National Assembly (1996-2000). Yang holds the Carl and Ren?e Behnke Endowed Professorship for Asian Health and directs the Asian Health Initiative at UW Medicine. His primary goal is to make Asian health more visible, and to better understand cardiovascular disease risk among Asian subpopulations. "My dad came from a small town in Korea and went on to hold highly respected positions in the government. I have far more resources than he had to do more. So why not do more?" Read the full story from UW Medicine Newsroom. Clinical news The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released data on patient safety indicators and inpatient 30-day mortality rates. For inpatient heart failure mortality, the Seattle VA is one of the top 10 hospitals (>3000 total, VA and non-VA) for lowest mortality rate. Research news New population study of Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders [cid:image007.jpg@01D9E7F2.A8E9B250]Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center has been selected as the national coordinating center for a new epidemiological cohort study among Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI). The study's primary objective is to delve into the risk factors contributing to cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, mental health issues, and other chronic health conditions affecting AANHPI populations. Fred Hutch was awarded a seven-year, $38.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to coordinate the effort to gather important health information on these populations, which are underrepresented in biomedical research. They'll also look at the social determinants of health - from socioeconomic status to food deserts to environmental racism - to see how these elements have impacted populations over the years. "This new study represents a major national effort to study the health and determinants of health of Asian Americans, a population that has been overlooked in research for many years," said Dr. James Floyd, associate professor (General Internal Medicine), who will be co-leading the new coordinating center as part of a multiple Principal Investigator team from Fred Hutch and the University of Washington. However, studies have documented racial inequities in serious illness and end of life care for Black patients as well as the biases and microaggressions Black patients have experienced. Dr. Crystal Brown, assistant professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) and colleagues recently sought to understand how these phenomena might intertwine.
